So The Bitter Truth for me that won't like some of y'all is that Amy's voice used to take the front seat in pretty much all of the music up until now and not really having cool instrumentals and that's a thing that makes it hard to play Ev songs while you're hanging out with friends. So TBT is great on that aspect, the instrumentals are some of the best in Ev's career and it feels like you can jam to them with your friends. The mixing and mastering was a bit of a miss though. I can't hear very well some of the details that I know are there (violins at the beginning of FTD and the strings on BB).

I just want to give a shoutout to Tim, Troy, Will and Jen's work on this album (Amy's is as always incredible too). It sounds amazing and you can really hear how cohesive they are as a unit. With all the crap they went through, individually and collectively, last year, the fact that we got this album at all is remarkable. But seeing footage from the Japanese studio documentary of them jamming together and working as a unit just made it so much more real. For so long, Ev was really Amy + band. Now it's a full on band and Tim, Troy, Jen and Will are all bringing their own bits to it. I love that. And they all seem so passionate about the band and the music.
Special shout out to Jen who's been isolated from everyone else for so long. Can't imagine how difficult that has been for her. The fact that she was able to still do so much on the album so remotely is a testament to the band's commitment. I really cannot wait to see a proper, rocked-out show with this line-up (the first time I saw this line-up live was the Synthesis tour in Melbourne in 2018). They just have such great energy and synergy that definitely wasn't there during the Fallen era, but started to pick up later.

They didn't say "lose the band." They just said it's loud and you can barely hear Amy's voice. They're not wrong. Homogenous meaning, they dynamic is lost. It's LOUD almost all the time. I get ear fatigue from Ev3 and TBT, so it's been harder to listen to those albums all the way through. It's understandable that Ev3 sounds the way it is because Wind-Up wanted a 'regular Evanescence rock album' and Amy bloodly gave them what they wanted. And she was angry with them for scrapping her original idea for the album, so anger means screaming vocals, loud guitars and drums. I just wished the electronics were more pronounced at least as originally intended. It also gives me ear fatigue, and the same applies to TBT. Maybe the loudiness has to do with Nick's production, which I'm not a fan of. He doesn't know how to work with the band's layers and ends up making a mess out of it. Well, Amy and the band love his work (and the pandemic forced them into working solely with him), so... who am I to complain? lol
I was excited when I learned they were going to use different producers on the album to ensure a diverse sound, but got mad when it was known Nick would be the sole producer. Damn Covid! I hope they don't work with him on the next album...This. This. THIS. Amy and the band have delivered solid material. It's Nick that doesn't appear to have a conceptual or sonic grasp on Evanescence. I was really disappointed when I discovered they'd be working together. I really hope there will be a re-release of TBT as suggested, featuring Perfect Dream and perhaps toned down versions of these songs (that I do love and want to appreciate) prioritizing Amy's voice, with a different producer. Whoever produced TOD knows how to allow each layer to contribute its own distinctive moment without competing with and negating the others completely the way Nick does. Nick designs the album to sound like Amy Lee singing with the neighborhood toddlers smashing pots and pans together in the kitchen for the hell of it, a motorcycle revving its engine in the garage, and COVID droplets permeating the air.

Has it been confirmed that there will be a re-release of TBT? I've been busy with work and I feel I'm missing out on something

Hmmm, what a shame. If only Amy and the band had the authority to listen to the production quality and be like "This is too loud and the guitars are too prominent and the vocals meld into the music...can we make some adjustments here? We need some softer music on this aggressively rock record we wanted to write". I wish Amy was a perfectionist and only released music she felt was complete rather than giving the producer the final say and merely settling. I wonder if things would've been different if she was ever made to shut up and sit back and let other people dictate what her band's music will be as a final result, like if she would've been forced at least once in her career to stand up and fight for her creativity and musical autonomy, then maybe she would be able to override his terrible production quality that is both poorly done and terrible. And it sucks because I never once heard her say a lot of times anything along the lines of "Nick wanted to bring the band more into it and I didn't get it at first, but when we did, it totally worked!" so like, he should get the hint that he sucks so much at mixing their layers by now. Well, fortunately they know his production quality and how bad he sucks at mixing and life so they never ever have to make the conscious decision to ever work with him again in the future ever again.

Nick designs the album to sound like Amy Lee singing with the neighborhood toddlers smashing pots and pans together in the kitchen for the hell of it, a motorcycle revving its engine in the garage, and COVID droplets permeating the air. I guess they worked again with Nick because he pushed them into being a real working band during the making of Ev3 (2011 sessions), because up to the ill-fated Lillywhite sessions (2010) it was Amy + a collaborator, and the band would just come in to play in the studio and not collaborate much on songwriting/music making, though we know Tim and Terry wrote with Amy in 2009, but apparently Will Science would have been given more credit back in 2010. I remember Amy and Science spent two months recording with Steve, and the band (Terry, Tim and Will) weren't involved until the third month. Anyway... On Fallen, it was a collaboration between Amy and Ben, and on TOD it was her and Terry. The producer who worked on TOD is the same from Fallen: Dave Fortman. And he mixed the former. I guess Nick is used to produce 'generic rock', so TBT ended up sounding a little bit like that... and it made them sound like a metal band (the same applies to Ev3), which they are not. lol! I was hoping for more experimentation given the band is not on a record label pushing them into writing radio-friendly songs. I remember Amy saying back in May 2020 that apart from the heavy material there would be songs in the electronic vein, whereas others would be more orchestral. But I get it that the pandemic ruined her plans and there were some limitations in terms of production. At least they were able to record strings though. I'm proud of the album, but it seems that reaching the end it becomes a bit off. My highlights are Artifact/The Turn, BPS, FTD, Yeah Right, BWY, Take Cover, Far from Heaven and Blind Belief. I have mixed feelings about Wasted on You, because it feels a bit off when the band kicks in. The trip-hoppy vibe of the verses are killed off by the heavy guitars and drums. Has it been confirmed that there will be a re-release of TBT? I've been busy with work and I feel I'm missing out on something No, Amy said in this interview that there are three leftovers from TBT that will eventually get finished. They have "band parts" recorded, but are not finished melody-wise and arrangement-wise. And the interviewer said we'll have to wait and see if there will be a surprise re-packaging with extra songs in the future. But Amy didn't hint at it.

Amy might even take on solo projects in the meantime. Who knows? The possibilities are endless!

I also feel the pandemic and postponement of the tour will put her into the 'creative mode' again. The band will definitely turn to livestream concerts every once in a while.
It makes me remember how Lady Gaga ended her Chromatica album cycle after the tour was cancelled and she did very little promotion due to the pandemic. But I feel Ev is trying to make the TBT era happen against all the odds.
