I never get to make posts about the songs.
October, I've always loved this song. I love the simplicity of the guitar. Amy's young, vuanerable voice is so sweet. I can relate to the concept of fighting feelings in order to protect yourself. Yet, end up hurting yourself instead and having to give in.

I usually do not post in this thread, but I've been meaning to since WWYG was the song of the week. Anyway, October... Not much I can say about this song since it is probably my least liked EvSong. Though, I do like the guitars and Amy's vocals in the song. I often find myself humming the guitar part at the beginning and reciting "Constantly ignoring the pain consuming me." I also like the first verse as well and how Amy sings "I'm sorry". I also feel that strong religious vibe from the song, which is a good thing if you're feeling down or like you're straying from God and you need a reassurance that this/that is where you belong. I guess is what I'm saying is that the song is full of hope, faith, dedication, and connected-ness. After this post, I think I'll give this song another chance.

I'm happy October is the song of the week; I haven't listened to this in forever. It's really pretty. I like the guitar in this, especially the verses - I think they're my favorite part. The chorus is still lovely though. I'd definitely be okay with them recording another acoustic guitar song like this in the future; Amy has grown as a songwriter (and singer) and Terry does a great job... It'd probably be more complex in form despite the limitedness of instruments. Just a thought.

I've always thought "October" was a really beautiful and spiritual song. This was really the only Ev song I ever got a religious vibe from. But that never prevented me from enjoying it. I was still recovering from a childhood of...a less than desirable religious experience. But I have to admit, I'd thought about suggesting that the band at my church play this song. (They'd played "BMTL" before. Lol.) But I think this can still easily be interpreted as a love song, so I never found the religious feel of it to be alienating at all. Even though the music is comprised of just acoustic guitars, it doesn't sound overly simple like you'd expect it to. The guitar parts are so beautifully written and weave together in a way that's interesting to the ears. Listening to this song just made me realize how much I like when they use acoustic guitars in their music. I always liked it in their older songs like this, "Understanding", "Solitude", "FOI" and many others; and I like that they continued to incorporate touches of it on Fallen and TOD in "Imaginary", "EF", "Missing" and "WOTW", "Lithium", and "ATILF". I'm really sad now that there wasn't any used on Ev3. I hope they bring it back on future albums. But back to the song. It has beautiful lyrics. On paper, they're quite simple, but I think the vocal melodies are what really brings them to life. There's a sadness to them, yet the song is overall very uplifting. I think the pain that was experienced while trying to run away comes through very strongly. You feel that sense of brokenness, regret, and defeat, but it still has the happy ending of returning to love. It's such a powerful song. Very emotional. I'd forgotten how gorgeous this song is and how much I love it. I'm glad to have reconnected with it this week.

I have really warmed up to October lately. I don't know why I hated it so much before.
Anyway, the new song of the week is up.

I like Understanding. I like all of the versions in their own way though. No version is completely the same, which is what I like about it. Specifically about the Sound Asleep version (since that is the version in the first post) I like because it has more of an atmospheric sound to it where as the 1998 EP version is just more of a "feel-y" and mellow type song. Ring, where did you get the lyrics from that you put in the front post?

I really love the guitar in the SA version.

While Understanding is generally one of my favorite songs EVER (in all of its forms, really), this Sound Asleep version was the first one I liked. I first listened to the Ev EP version beforehand but just wasn't into it at the time, which is so odd because after getting into the Sound Asleep version, I just adored it. I guess the Sound Asleep version gave me a more gradual approach to the awesomeness of the Ev EP version and live version.
As far as this version specifically? I love it. The guitar part (which takes the precedence over the pipe organ in the original) gives a really relaxing, ethereal vibe. And of course, in typically Understanding format, the ending's breakdown is amazing. It never fails to tug at my heart. This version is shorter, less drawn-out, but still a really beautiful piece of work and no less amazing than the Ev EP version.

Man, I've been slacking here. I'm a bad worm. Missed one of my favorite Ev songs too! I've been feeling like poop lately and haven't been able to focus on anything. I just don't have the concentration to listen to and write up stuff about the songs. That makes me sad because I was really enjoying doing this every week. Hopefully I can get myself back on track soon. I guess for maybe the next couple weeks I'll just have to sit back and enjoy everyone else's posts in here.

I've always loved Snow White Queen. There's such an eerie, creepy quality to the music, and while there's a lot of creepy music that I don't enjoy at all, this song is so compelling. It's one of my favourite songs on TOD. I love the way the chorus seems to lunge forward after the bridges, and the vocal line is fantastic. My favourite part of the song is definitely the middle-eight, though. The music begins to build and Amy's voice rises and everything begins to feel more frantic until it reaches it's climax and pushes forward into the last chorus (actually, now I think about it, this song might be a good sexy song for this very reason ). I especially love the backing vocals in the second verse (as Amy sings 'in a dream'). TOD is fantastic for harmonies and backing vocals, and they add another delicious layer to the song.

^Well said! Snow White Queen didn't immediately click with me when I first got The Open Door, but I gradually found elements that I really loved, like the middle eight and that last chorus. The last "all I want is you" sounds SO awesome, creating so much intensity before reverting to the eerie electronic part that I love. I do love it as a whole now, but those parts that I fell in love with first are still my favorites. Very dark, very different.

I LOVE Snow White Queen! It's so creepy, haunting, epic and amazing! And those backing vocals and those weird noises throughout it that are like the ones from EID!!! Oh Mannnnnn!!!!!!!!! I always get the creepy feeling when I think about what Amy must have felt when she had the experience and when she wrote this song. Even when I just think about the context of the song... *shivers*

I really like the live version of this song. I don't get people who say that this isn't a live song.
