^I like your essays; they make me feel like a slacker though XD I think I forget how much I like this song sometimes. It really is great. The electronic elements make it so catchy throughout its entirety, and I really love the chorus as well. The vocal lines were beautiful. And I agree with Worm Baby about David's vocals in the chorus; he sounded great on it! It kind of made it a little more dreamy and flowy, if that makes sense.

Oh yay, "Give Unto Me"! Yet another song that I really like! You've been making these past few weeks easy for me. Or maybe it's just that there's not many Ev song's I don't like. I'll start with the instrumental. It is such a lovely, incredibly atmospheric little piece. It creates this perfect dark, mystical mood. I know that when us fans talk about "Give Unto Me", it's pretty much always referring to the lyric version, but this version definitely deserves more credit than it gets! (I'm certainly guilty of neglecting this version too though.) And it makes me wish even more that Ev would do some instrumental work again. Even something as short and simple as this would be so awesome. As for the lyric version, I've always loved this song. I realize it's very cliche "gothy", but I don't care; it's still a beautiful song. And when you consider it was written by a 14/15 year old, I think it's even more impressive. The piano arrangements in this song are gorgeous. I'm no expert, but it always sounded a little more complex to me than what Amy usually does. I wish she'd use this style again on occasion. It has a more classical feel to me than most of her stuff. I also really love - I don't know what to call it - but the varying tempo and emphasis she plays with throughout the song. It's very expressive. And I especially adore the bridge. I like how it unexpectedly takes on this happy tone before plunging back into the darkness. While the synth element is minimal, I think it's inclusion in the very beginning and end is perfect. It has this eerie, foreboding feeling that invites and envelopes you into the dark, melancholy of the song, and then creeps back in at the end to slowly drift you back into the real world. The lyrics, while quite melodramatic, I think are beautifully written. I used to relate to this song so much when I was in unrequited love as a teenager, silently pining over a boy from a distance. But I loved the melodrama of it all. And this song holds a place in my heart for it. I think my favorite lyrics are those of the backing vocals, particularly: "Fear not the flame of my love's candle, let it be the sun in your world of darkness."

I think my favorite lyrics are those of the backing vocals, particularly: "Fear not the flame of my love's candle, let it be the sun in your world of darkness." My favorite too! And I've always thought it was fun to sing "I want to heal you, I want to save you from the dark." Something about the lyrics and melody there. It's cool how they did the backing vocals in this one, how it's so prominent. Very pretty altogether. Though I do enjoy the Ev EP outtake, I tend to prefer the instrumental one; it's so dark and beautiful. It'd be so awesome if they made an instrumental intro similar to this.

Just now figured out we have a new song of the week. Anyway. When I first discovered Origin, Where Will You Go was immediately a favorite for a really long time. I love the use of organ in this song! It makes it sound really eerie in a different way that isn't too brooding - in fact, I've always thought this song has a distinct sense of urgency. And Amy's power when she sings "but you can't reject the whole world" is just awesome. Ironically, I find no urgency in the Ev EP version whatsoever; this song really grew. But I always feel for Amy in the EP version and the Vino's performance. Poor girl had to have some serious courage to try and belt that ending out in front of everybody.

Yay, I love "Where Will You Go"! I've always thought it was one of their best older songs and a real highlight of Origin. I do also like the EP version. The song takes on a much more serious, somber tone. And I think the beat is really cool - very trip-hop. But I think the Origin version is definitely superior, so I'll talk more about that one.
One word: organ! God, I can't get enough of organ in Ev's music. I really wish they'd bring it back. It is so perfect in this song. I always loved that they used it as the whole foundation for the song. I'd love to see them do another song with organ as the main instrument. Even though they've done it here and with "Understanding" before, they could still make it unique. Just comparing the 2 versions of "WWYG", they are so different musically and emotionally. It shows just how versatile they can be with the organ!
I love the piano in the beginning and end, and the way the guitars mimic that melody. And all the electronics and programming are perfection! It gives the song a dark, heavy, chaotic feel, while also having a lot of atmosphere and a lightness to it. It's such an interesting and unique sound. And the beats in this song are so badass! I also love that deep, bass synth - especially during the 2nd verse, when everything else stops and you just hear that noise for a second. It's such a cool moment. Another awesome part is during the bridge, when everything gets stripped away to just the organ and Amy's urgent vocals.
The lyrics are fantastic. I really like the whole message of the song. I feel like they're different from most of Ev's earlier lyrics, as I think most of the time, their songs were more inwardly directed and often related to love. These ones are a clear and critical message to another person. They're harsh, yet they still seem to come from a place of caring. It feel like it's about watching someone you love destroy themselves. Sometimes you have to be tough to get your point across. My favorite part is the bridge, particularly: "I can hear you in a whisper, but you can't even hear me screaming". That's always been a favorite Ev lyric of mine.
I consider this song an Ev classic. It's got so many of the unique elements that make Ev who they are, and I think it's such a memorable and standout song in their catalog. This is a song I would love to see them break out live sometime in the future, like they did with "Understanding".

Got a new song for us, Ring? Or I guess I should say, for me and RapturedLight. We seem to be the only ones participating.

Sorry, but my Internet is being very slow and stupid right now. I'll put the next song of the week up sometime in the next next 6-13 hours.

That's a good idea! I wanna see thoughts and opinions from more people in here. I think this thread is such a great way to keep the love for Ev alive during the break. It's nice to reconnect with songs I haven't listened to in forever, and I like the challenge of finding the positive qualities in songs I don't care as much for (which has often led me to having more appreciation for the song)!

The new Song of the Week is up!
This song is in my top 5 Ev songs. At first when I listened to The Open Door, I didn't pay much attention to this song, but then one day I was like OMFG THIS IS AMAZING. It's such a shame it wasn't played live at the 2009 shows.

I couldn't get into this song when I first got The Open Door, but I fell in love with it little by little. I guess it was just a little too different for me to handle at the time. First, I loved the vocalizing at the end; it's a very catchy vocal line and fun to sing along to. (The end of the second verse is also pretty fun to sing to.) Then, I fell in love with the lyrics. For a while, that I was all I really enjoyed until everything else kind of filled in after that. Amy's vocals are so ethereal, and the guitars are really awesome in this song as well. And of course, this part: If ... I ... cut you down to a thing I can use ... I fear ... there'd be nothing good left of you *brain explodes* Anyway. Lose Control is a pretty unique Evanescence song. I like it.
