It's funny how their commercial success declines as their musicianship gets better. It's a shame, really... I think that happens to everyone. "Normal" people don't like good music.

Fo' rizzle... My two favorite artists can't seem to ever live up to their debuts (even though EVERYTHING they released after was better).... All the mainstream remembers is that one album that was a hit.

Tell me what song could possibly throw Bring Me to Life out of the Park. Imo, almost any song from TOD and Ev3 kicks BMTL's ass, to put it delicately. Don't get me wrong, I still love the song, but they've grown soooo much musically since then.

Oh, then you're probably right. Commercial wise, it's unlikely Ev will get the success they had with BMTL.

I'm talking about in a mainstream opinion... These days it does not take a good song to have a hit single. It just takes fame. Gaga, Adele, Bieber, Nicki, etc... They don't have hit songs because the songs themselves are incredible. Sure, they may have one or two singles out that really are good songs, but it's not the quality of the song that determines its success in the mainstream. Evanescence got their success from a movie, not because radio stations were blown away by BMTL.

^^I agree about the fame part and how movies and stuff like that help artists a lot, but i also think that it takes a song that clicks with the audience somehow. It happens sometimes that a new band comes out of nowhere with a super hit song that hasn't been featured in any major movie at all. I guess some songs, regardless of how good or bad quality they are (hit songs are often just simple songs with catchy melodies and not much else), just have something in them that catches the audience's attention, maybe they're very catchy, maybe the singer has an intoxicating voice, maybe they're songs aimed at the night club scene. Like, for exaple right now if you release an electronic song that people would want to dance to in a night club, you'll probably have more success than if you release a rock ballad or a jazz song. This represents a minority of the cases, though. And most times, there are songs that wouldn't have caught the audience's attention if they weren't featured in a big movie or a big TV show that everyone watches. I guess sometimes success comes due to a combination of the former and the later and most times it's just a result of the later. But then again, i don't know shit about the music industry so maybe i'm totally wrong. This is just the feeling i get when i look at the mainstream world.

Bring Me To Life was so successful because it was so different; hence the whole dubbing of Lacuna Coil meets Linkin Park, but it wasn't too far from what 'mainstream' people would listen to, to make people dislike it.
I would argue that some of their other songs e.g. CMWYS and WYW could have been quite mainstream too, and in my opinion half of Evs problem was Wind-up, who didn't bother to do their job of promoting on radios and videos etc, you only have to look at the latest 'single' LIP which had no video and only went to promo on UK radio stations, as far as I know... and being in the UK I still haven't heard it on the radio!
I felt the same with Sweet Sacrifice, I remember getting so excited as for about a week and a half straight the video was number 1 most requested of the day on a few big music channels in the UK... and everything indicated it selling really well, then it never even got released so you can understand why the public lose a bit of interest.

^^I too think that wind-up ruined EV3 a lot. I think the new songs are some of the catchiest and most digestible they've composed since Fallen. I think that with a more commited and smart promotion from the label the album could have done better in terms of popularity (not near as good as Fallen, of course). Some people don't even know to this day that Ev has been out with a new record since last year. When TOD came out, although it was not as successful as Fallen, a bunch of people still knew that there were some new Ev songs around, the band even gained new rabid fans through it (i'm an example of that, i was never blown away by Fallen, but fell madly in love with TOD)
I'm not getting the same feeling this time around. Maybe it's just my impression.

^ Right. I was in a Spencer's store right around this time last year, wearing my Ev shirt and an employee there was like, "Evanescence, huh? What are they up to? I haven't heard anything about them in 6 or 7 years." I told him their new album came out last month.
It's weird though, when you're obsessed with something you sometimes forget the rest of the world isn't and don't know what the blue hell you're talking about. (At least for me.)

i would like for them to reunite or do something for the 10th anniversary of Fallen, but it is unlikely, but cannot rule anything out at this point. Anythings possible right?

I think for the "normal crowd" Evanescence's music is a bit too much to take in. My friends think they sound messy , whilst I love and appreciate how artistic they are (especially TOD)
