Amy had a phone interview with La Viola, music show from Argentina and one of the sponsors of Pepsi Music Festival 2012, where Evanescence is going to play next October 21st.
Evanescence "People have to be connected"
Amy Lee spoke with La Viola Web before their concert in Buenos Aires. "In our shows, everyone is united, without barriers. Even if we don't speak the same language", she said.
Amy Lee is very happy of coming back to Buenos Aires. The Evanescence lead singer answered a call from La Viola Web and even after two cuts in the communication she didn't lose her sense of humour. "We're really far from each other, I can hear you better now!"
Evanescence is a rock and metal band from Little Rock, Arkansas, created back in 1995 by singer, pianist and songwriter Amy Lee and guitarist Ben Moody. According to the legend, he found Amy singing in a bar the song "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)" buy Meat Loaf. "There's a story around but I can't really remember" Lee said.
After recording two independent EPs, the band released "Fallen", selling over 17 million copies around the world and winning two Grammy Awards. Success was also on their side in their next releases.
But the group went through hard times too. In 2003 during their European tour, Ben Moody left the band. John LeCompt and Rocky Gray also walked away. Amy Lee went on, being the only original band member at the moment.
How do you feel about this next show in Buenos Aires?I'm really happy. We toured Argentina a couple years ago and to be honest, our fans are fabulous. In this South American Tour we'll play Costa Rica, Perú and Colombia for the first time. We just finished touring the US and everything went right.
How's the show going to be?We'll be playing songs from our last record and also the most requested songs by our Argentinian fans. We want to do the best possible show.
Were you always interested in music?Yes, I started when I was in school. I wanted to be a classical composer. I met Moody and we started to put the band together.
What do you remember about your first experience in a recording studio?I won't forget it. It was really special. We found a lot of open doors in such little time. I was finishing high school and I suddenly found myself recording. I have a special love for those memories, we composed for two years and worked really hard. It was pretty crazy.
How would you define Evanescence's style? There are a lot of influences, a mix of my favourite bands. You can find a lot of things, rock, classical music, electronic, industrial. I love all that and it's not very common to find a group with all those influences.
"My Immortal" was a big song in Argentina. What can you say about it?It's a really special moment in our shows. I'ts one of our most important songs. It brings a lot of memories back.
A lot of people relates your band to christian rock. What do you think? It was a big deal. We're looking for answers, music relates to your beliefs, but from your heart. The religious topic has a small presence.
What's the message you put in your lyrics? There are things that inspire me and the best is to be true, to be yourself. What's important is that people need each other, they have to be connected. In our shows, everyone is united without barriers. Even if we don't speak the same language. Humans need to understand each other.
Do you write on the road? When you're on the road you don't have a lot of time. You have soundchecks, concerts, and you spend time with the fans. I try to keep myself inspired but my place for writing is my home.
How's your relationship with social networks? They're a very important and powerful tool. We don't have to wait to have a microphone to be able to release news. You always have something to say and social networks are the perfect place. I'm writing all the time.
