Inspired by the Evanescence Instrumental Poll, which I thought was about this... But it is not. So I popped my thread cherry and made one!
Basically just pick which songs you think have the best instrumentation/music behind the vocals.... Then tell us why you picked them.

I voted for Lost in Paradise because when I crank it up so that it consumes my mind I am almost always moved to tears at some point and that doesn't change when it's just the instrumental. I love that I still feel the song even without Amy's vocals. I also love how the music builds up to that first crash of guitars and then continues to build up to the "Run away!" part and I really love the strings and how they heighten everything I'm already feeling when I listen to the song.

Hehehehehe..... Eight people can't follow instructions! I kid.... I agree about LIP, the build is fantastic and DAT CELLO! I remember in the Nobel Prize performance right before "run away" the strings sounded sooo fantastic building up to it.

I voted for MHIB, ET, LIP and NGB. MHIB because it's really a good piano'tune', somewhat more complex than we are used from Ev. I love the drums with the piano at the beginning. I think they should experiment more with that. When I heard the instrumental I appreciated the song a lot more than before. ET: love the piano, simple but ooh so catchy. The music in the middle eight/bridge is fantastic, I almost feel like, Amy please hold your mouth for a sec! (Blasphemy I know ) LIP: obvious I think. Piano build up, cello, then baam all the guitars and all those strings going on. NGB: Rock those guitars! Piano intermezzo and the epic strings during the 'Are you theeeere'. Damn, I missed out Swimming Home. It's really chilling. Ow well.

SH, ET, MHIB and NGB.
MHIB and NGB for the same reasons tightrope mentioned^^
SH is so peaceful and beatiful, with that harp and all those pretty, little sounds, i feel like i'm lying on green grass, with birds all around me everytime i listen to it...just amazing.
ET because the piano, while simple, it's super catchy and uptempo. The whole song is pretty unEvanescence-ish. There's a vibe of emergency during the verses that i don't get from most Ev songs, so this one is definetely innovative. And the bridge/middle eight is killer.
SD is another one i would pick, if i had the chance to vote for more than 4 songs. The harp in it is simple, but sooo beautiful. The strings sound beautiful, too. Besides, it stands out among all those rock tunes.
I didn't think about LIP until you guys mentioned it. I just don't listen to that song very often, so i don't have it very present, but now that you mentioned it, it's got a great build up, i agree. It's outstanding till the drums and guitars kick in, i just don't like the abrupt way they kick in. The second verse is also beautiful. And the chorus, too. It's a fine song.

I voted ET, NGB, Oceans, and SD... I'm rethinking the last two, but I do think they're worth mentioning.
I agree with what you said about ET, carolexodus, that it's very un-Evanescence-ish. I think the song is so distinctly Evanescence in a way, but at the same time unlike any song they've ever written, which is part of what makes it so remarkable. They've done that repeating piano motif in a few songs before (Like You, Lose Control, etc...), but it's generally very slow, giving a very different impression than ET's uptempo piano hook. I'd say the guitar part is different for them, but it sort of falls in line with other songs on this album (SYW, NGB, Oceans, Disappear. They all have similar guitar parts)... Then that strings/piano part near the end with the rolling drums! It's a very uniquely tender bit of music on this overly aggressive album.... Oh yeah, and DAT BASS.
NGB is probably my favorite song at the moment. The tempo shift at the chorus is really nice, and the piano part (while somewhat derivative of Give Unto Me) is among the most significant on an album really lacking fantastic piano parts.

I voted for My Heart Is Broken (the strings are mesmerizing, the piano riff is cool/fun, the drums are incredibly powerful and the guitars are probably one of the best things of the album, I love that heavy vibe translated on those guitars. The bass line is not as interesting as in EofD, NGB, TC) And I also voted What You Want. I don't it's just great, it has it all.

I can't for the life of me decide because half the album fits into the criteria.
At first I was going to pick Never Go Back and Swimming Home, but then I remember "Oh LiP has really pretty strings, but then Disappear has a neat piano riff during the guitars, and then MHIB also has a beautiful piano riff throughout the whole song..."
THIS IS WHY WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS.

This is definitely much harder to chose than it would be for TOD songs.. but I went for MOS. I think the riff in that is once of my favourites, and it has a cool solo too which helps but this was REALLY tricky. I'd say Swimming Home also for all the electronic elements, and Secret Door for the harp.... and Erase This for the drums and the amazing beat IT'S TOO HARD.

I voted for MHIB, ET, Sick and NGB.
One major reason: Drum God Will Hunt.
I absolutely love Sick. This song gives me a 3½ minute eargasm (as does NGB). The very beginning is just so sooooo COOL and those drums, WOW. The guitars are so dark and super cool in the chorus and the beginning+verses are just epic.

TC, EotD, NGB, Secret Door
Her voice just shines through, and these are all very different styles, which parades how wonderful her voice is in any type of music

Never Go Back, My Heart Is Broken, Lost In Paradise. I think Never Go Back is the heaviest song off Ev3, both Amy's voice and the music is powerful. I like the loud drums, guitars and stuff... It has the best music <3 My Heart is Broken & Lost In Paradise begin with Amy's beautiful piano riff... I love those melodies =]
