"Goodbye son. Be nice to God." "I made you bologna and mustard, with the edges cut off, just the way you like it."
This song is so mystical. I love listening to it with my eyes closed.

Ascension Of The Spirit -Located on the album(s): "Sound Asleep EP" as Track #6 -NO BMI# (!!!!!) -Length Time: 11:48 -Acoustic Version Available? [NO] -Live Version Available? [NO] Lyrics: "Goodbye son. Be nice to God." "I made you bologna and mustard, with the edges cut off, just the way you like it." INSTRUMENTAL Song: Some Things To Think About/Debate Over -The song posted above IS THE ORIGINAL version. The Shortened Edit 1 (i.e. the 3:15 version, although people have been known to have a three-minute variation on this on both having it shorter and longer (3:12 up to 3:18). The same can be said for the Shortened Edit 2 (i.e. the 3:45 version) which can also be shorter or longer for three-minutes (3:42 up to 3:48)) is the song exampled below. Note that both the Shortened Edit 1 (music only) and the Shortened Edit 2 (clip + music) are both fan-creations, even though the SE1 spread more throughout the EvCommunity compared to the original itself! (Hence fake versions of the EP having the SE1 version). The original was finally re-located in October of 2005 and began slowly spreading in the EvCommunity. Once again, the first Shortened Edit is posted below: Song: Notice the confusion of these posters, before the original version was found in the Fall of 2005: On the Original "Sound AsleepWhisper EP," "Ascension Of The Spirit" is an 11 minute track that has mostly blank space, and then there a quote at the end from the movie "My Boyfriend's Back." - Although most of 'Ascension Of The Spirit' is blank space, there is a little clip from the film My Boyfriend's Back, which says "Goodbye son. Be nice to God" and "I made you bologna and mustard, with the edges cut off, just the way you like it."
That's wierd because my version of AOTS is a bunch of synth strings. And there's no talking. Do I have a wierd version?
That's what mine is too! Either the talking version is very rare or else there was a version put out with no talking (that version is the most popular one; everyone else I've talked to says theirs is just the music too). Acension of the Spirit is 11:48 minutes long, It was a hidden track on the EP, which meant that so much of the track was silence, halfway through the silence there was a movie clip, followed by more silence then the instrumental finally kicked in. Whoever ripped the 3:11 version from the EP cut out the silence and the movie clip, leaving it at 3:11. You can download the 11:48 ... somewhere. I'm not sure. All i know is the clip starts at 2:55 until 3:26. The song is then silent again until 8:19. Also, there's a 3:45 version available to download on the web, that includes the film clip. 2. On the real Sound Asleep/Whisper EPs, Ascension Of The Spirit is a hidden track, at length 11:48. The song is silent to begin with (which is why it's a hidden track - you were supposed to think the CD had finished) and then there is a little film clip from 2:55 until 3:26. The song is then silent again until 8:19, where the real instrumental song starts. As this part at the end is the real song, somebody cut all the blank parts off (including the film clip), leaving the song at a length of 3:16, which I listed as the "shortened edit". I think there's also an edit somebody made which included the film clip followed by the song itself, which is most likely the 3:45 version you found. -The Shortened Edit 2 that we have was created by FOI member nyohah. This isn't a big deal, considering it is EvScripture that both SE1 and SE2 were fan-made, and since the SE2 was, for some reason, un-findable (it circulated around EvBoard around 2004, but then disappeared), nyohah made it some time around 2006 (it was sometime after finding the original AOTS, hence being able to re-cut it). The version is 3:47 in duration, due to adding two seconds of silence between the clip and the song so that it could sound better. -Ascension of the Spirit is one of the eight songs NOT listed on the BMI Website under Evanescence. -There is some confusion as to how Amy + Ben were able to record this: Did they put the notes through a computer program to simulate an orchestra playing? Did they hire a real orchestra to play (just for an EP though? Didn't they say they barely had enough money to hire people to play with them live let alone an orchestra?) Is it played with a synth/string-like instrument thing? Is it from a movie or something? (and so on). Overall consensus here on EvThreads v2 seems to be that they used a keyboard to play this song. -The movie quotes come from My Boyfriend's Back (1993): My Boyfriend’s Back (1993):
Mr. Dingle (Edward Herrmann's): Goodbye Son, be nice to God.
Mrs. Dingle (Mary Beth Hurt's): I made you bologna and mustard, with the edges cut off, just the way you like it.
[Thud]
You eat all of it you hear me? You hear your mother? [Sob] Clip @ 13:37: THANKS to DoubleA for the lyrics and the videos are from FallenEvArmy! The movie was uploaded by CrawledOutOfAGrave.

The EvReference has this listed: "The first recorded instrumental ever made by Evanescence." Um, where is this information from? How do we know Give Unto Me (Sound Asleep) wasn't made first or if there are other unreleased instrumentals that were made before GUM and AOTS?

I was about to ask this same question! haha! :) Lol. I looked through the contributions of the person who added the info, and it's the same person who added this misinformation on the Tourniquet page: "On Fallen this track is titled 'Tourniquet' but on 2002 Demos it's called 'My Tourniquet'", and this misinformation on the GUM page: "It was originally a piano instrumental released on the Whisper/Sound Asleep EP in 1998." There is alot of misinformation on the EvRef that the Administrators never removed so I'm guessing the info on the AOTS page is probably not true.

Whether that was because of the guy who leaked them or if they were really called that as a working title, we won't know until the Band or Amy confirm this. The Soul Embraced version, which this song is a remake of, is called "My Tourniquet". Idk about the GUM info. Lol. But yes, there is a lot of misinformation on the EvRef. Just look at the Origin page where is said about the reprints of Origin. lol. My source confirmed that was false.

How do we know Give Unto Me (Sound Asleep) wasn't made first or if there are other unreleased instrumentals that were made before GUM and AOTS? I agree. They probably assumed this, since we knew of AOTS before we knew about GUM (SA EP). Back then, people thought the GUM Demo was the one on the EP, which proved to be false. So it's good that this information got removed.

Is it played with a synth/string-like instrument thing? Is it from a movie or something? And so on . . . I'm pretty sure it's not an orchestra, or real instruments at all. I mean, it's plausible that they could have gotten a school orchestra to play for them for free, but the strings sound like really well-mixed synths to me. On my old keyboard, the strings sound was quite close to the way the strings sound in AotS. So... yeah. Lol.

I agree with Kazlan. The strings sound to... flowing... to be a real orchestra. Plus they don't have that vibration sound the bow makes on the string when the player is holding out the notes. They don't even have that deep sound that real string instruments have. They also sound like some of the string options I had on my old keyboard as well.

That's really neat. I don't know how those things work, which is why I was always confused as to what exactly AOTS was made from. So we think this song came from them playing it via a keyboard?

That's what I would assume. Amy, after all, complained that My Immortal (Origin/Track 4 Fallen) wasn't even a real piano. lol. So I would assume it was just a keyboard that they probably plugged into a computer. It is, after all, a very high quality string sound. They may have even made it using a sound database like they had to do with the storm in Eternal. They probably did the same with the GUM SA version. At least, of course, this is all just my opinion. It won't be confirmed how they made these tracks unless Amy or Ben says something about it and we all know Amy HATES talking about Origin, so she probably wouldn't want to talk about pre-Origin stuff. If I remember correctly, FaixaFive said Amy got mad and walked away from him when he told Amy about the authenticity of his EP...

Amy has some strange Hulk-smash moments when it comes to anything pre-Fallen. Which is a shame, because they are so mystical it makes the fans want to ask more questions about them. Maybe Ben would know? Do we think he handled all the instrumentals? I mean, Ben + David did Eternal (we know they named it at least; Amy did the piano parts?), maybe he was primarily in charge of AOTS & GUM too?

^I think Ben meant the piano vocal version of GUM, not the instrumental. We can also bring up the debate on how we know that the first track on the SA EP is an instrumental version of GUM... Anyway... Ben indeed solely wrote My Immortal. When they reworked it for Origin, that's when Amy and David took part in rewriting/reworking it. As for Haunted, Ben wrote the story that is behind the song.
