Amy Lee Picks Best Evanescence Song for Introducing New Fans
August 9, 2022
Evanescence are a band with several iconic radio hits from throughout the 2000s, and a whole lot of other material that their devoted fanbase heralds just the same. Having been around for over two decades now and with a catalog spanning five full-lengths of original material, there're obviously a lot of people who've heard Evanescence, but like any band, there're also many rock fans new and old who have yet to take the dive.
For them, Revolver is here to help with our "Point of Entry" series, in which we ask artists to pick the one standout cut from across their entire catalog that they believe is the best place for newbie listeners to begin their journey. Below, ahead of Evanescence's big summer tour with Korn, singer Amy Lee does the honors. It's a tough choice.
"Broken Pieces Shine"
It wouldn't be from the first album. I feel like we got better after that. I know it seems weird to pick something off our new album [2021's The Bitter Truth], but I think I would. I think it'd probably be maybe the first track off the new album, "Broken Pieces Shine." I feel like that encapsulates something thematically and lyrically that is very us. There's something about being the different ones, about being the broken ones, about being the people who have been through something. Those are our people.
And saying, not only am I willing to expose that vulnerability in myself — I'm hurt and there's something broken. But also, I don't wish that I didn't have that. I'm going to wear my scars proudly and I'm going to wear my tears as a badge of honor. I don't want to forget the pain, I want to use the pain. I think there's a lot of all that in that song where, for me, it's like, this is what Evanescence is.
And I think it's a great song musically, as well. The way that it kicks in, I put a lot of thought into that intro. Like, this is gonna be us coming back with our first music that's the rock stuff, first all-original album since 2011 — we need to come back with who we are. Something about the feeling of getting back up again after being knocked down so many times and climbing back up out of that hole, I think that song is a good encapsulation of Evanescence.
It's a really great song. My favourite from TBT by far. And it does tick a lot of Evanescence boxes (heavy, chugging guitars, and a huge chorus of shifting vocals in the background) with an extra twist - generally more positive message within the darkness. "Survival hurts" is such a great lyric.
