Amy Lee speaks with Donny Fandango about how 'Synthesis Live' came to be, how "metal" it is to play with an orchestra, and more
Evanescence singer Amy Lee caught up with Donny Fandango ahead of their SOLD OUT HoHo Show at Peabody Opera House on Sunday (December 3). She spoke about how the reimagining of Synthesis came to be, including the idea of playing with a full orchestra, playing beautiful theatres while wearing "fancy clothes", how playing in this type of busy, high-level orchestral atmosphere forces her to focus and "step up" and much more.

Honestly, she's the most 'metal' person who doesn't identify as a metalhead I know. She just gets it. There's no pretence. It's not "let's be dark and sinister and serious and shout down anyone who isn't as dark and heavy as us" it's not "let's dress dark for the sake of dressing dark" or "let's play heavy music for the sake of heavy music" it's "I'm doing what I want and f*** everyone else", and I think this is why legit metalheads are slowly beginning to warm to her and her music because Evanescence isn't the 'poser' band that actual posers make them out to be. They are and ever have been, incredibly authentic.
I often get it because I never really dress day to day in a stereotypical way. You'll never see me wearing studs or patch-jackets, and I rarely wear jeans. Why? I just don't find those clothes comfortable and that's not how I want to represent myself. Amy runs around wearing flourescent shirts and dresses as a unicorn, why? Because she wants to. And yet we still get it all the time where it's the whole "you don't look like you listen to/play heavier music". What does a metalhead even 'look' like anyway? I'm glad this whole stereotype/club mentality is slowly being dismantled because I don't think a lot of people realise how hypocritical they're being when they're trying to 'defend metal from the posers' in this way.

Dude, I so agree with you on this. word by word. you described my thoughts very well. this is exactly how she is. Heaviness, metal, or whatever we call it is in her blood. She's a natural. it's a part of her strong personality and exceptional talent. She does not pretend. She doesn't try to show how angry, how hateful, how invulnerable and strong she is. She doesn't try to pretend that yeah I'm cool, I'm a metaller, I'm that goth chick with a dark soul, I'm the leader and front woman of a bunch of cool guys and I can roar and claw like a wild animal, and instead, like so many other look funny, stupid and empty. And this is just a part of what makes her so 'Original', so unique, so innovative. What makes her create real original music that at the same time, unintentionally, without being her main purpose (sometimes she even hates it when people consider her as a metal artist), sounds so heavy and metal. When she headbangs so awesome on stage, she's not doing it just as an act. as a symbol of metal. it's 110% her own natural reaction to the music. She sacrifices her soul on stages, she burns her piano with each note. For me it's like Amy Lee isn't metal, Metal is Amy Lee. More than 50 years after bands like Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath we can still count this woman as an original founder of Metal imo because what she makes is SO original. It's not a copy of bands before her. She's raised the bar. I can't compare her to anyone else neither in terms of musical richness nor success specially within other female fronted bands in the history. She definitely has added something to music and specifically to metal/rock genre. This is one of the few reasons why I love and adore this awesome artist so much.

THIS It's undeniably high praise, but I completely agree. She personifies the whole principal without even once trying.
