INTERVIEW | Amy Lee (Evanescence) - „It's easier to design stuff myself than try to find it!”Amy Lee, the frontwoman of Evanescence, talks about her favorite movies, the latest album and the band's new tour in the interview below.
One of the biggest acts of the early 2000’s, the rock band Evanescence came back in Romania, last week, for a great gig at Arenele Romane. We had the opportunity to speak to Amy Lee about the future of Evanescence, her favorite movies, and a slew of other topics. Check out our interview below!
Did you feel any pressure when everyone asked you about the comeback of Evanescence?I do my best to tune out the noise when it comes to pressure to make new music. The real urgency I feel comes from within me. I have to obey my heart. Sometimes that means I can't sleep I'm so passionate about a piece of music I'm working on. And sometimes it means taking time to live life without always thinking about my career. You said that the new album „Synthesis” is „something unique, something complex, something a little bit beyond that”. What makes it different?Well first of all it contains new recordings of pre-released Evanescence songs. There is plenty of new stuff to hear on the album, including 2 new songs, but I have to make it clear that it's not an album of entirely new music.
Also, this album is not band driven like our last one. It's a focus on the programming and electronic side of our sound, as well as the symphonic side. This is the first time we've recorded (and will be touring with) full orchestra.None of the band's studio albums feature the same lineup. What are the advantages and the disadvantages in this case? This band's been around for 20 years at this point. Many talented musicians, producers, directors, and artists of all kinds have contributed to Evanescence. It's a beautiful thing to have the freedom to grow and change, and I'm very proud of where we are, and who we are, today. What do you enjoy more: writing music for a film or for a commercial album?I don't care what I'm writing for, as long as I'm giving it all I've got!Your new ghostly ballad „Speak To Me” gives me shivers. How much were you influenced by the movie „Voice From the Stone ”, when you composed the song?I loved the movie from the first time I saw a rough cut in 2015. I was immediately inspired by the visual beauty, spot-on performances, the romance, the suspense, the pain in the separation of mother and son- my heart was ready to pour out as soon as the screen went black.Have you ever thought of writing for Tim Burton? You may also inspire him for a new story. It's only my life-long dream! Your favorite movies are „An American Tail" and „The Nightmare Before Christmas”. Why do you like more animated movies?I wouldn't say those are my top two favorite movies, but yes, I love them both - and I really do love animation. I guess it's extra entertaining and fascinating to me because animation is moving art. Each still is a painting, an art piece someone drew, molded or programmed, as opposed to just capturing what's happening with a camera. It lends itself to more creativity- the artist can show total extreme versions of how they see the world in that moment. If you could transform yourself into a cartoon character, who would you like to become? Why?Ha! I don't know. Maybe Flame Princess from Adventure Time! Is it true that you design most of your costumes? What is your source of ispiration when considering fashion style?I put together what I wear onstage, and I design many of the pieces. I've done that for quite a few of our videos and shoots too. I get an image in my head of how I want to look and feel to best represent the music, and myself onstage. Part of it is about comfort and confidence too, because the music comes first. So I'm strangely picky about what works and what doesn't. It's easier to design stuff myself than try to find it! Amy Lee & her son, Jack
You said in old interview that you feel lucky, being a mom and a rockstar in the same time. When do you feel that you can't be the best for both sides?Very often! I'm learning more with every year of age to embrace my flaws and accept that you can't always be perfect. I care more about my son than anything, and I'm always going to put him first. Since he's 2 that means I'm desperately overdue for a chiropractic adjustment and a nap most of the time!Has your son, Jack, shown any interest yet in music?Definitely. He loves to sing, play "drums" on ANYTHING, and we sit at the piano together, play guitar, and dance to music quite often.Looking back and ahead, how do you think the birth of Jack has changed your view on life?I'm both stronger and more sensitive. Quicker to cry, more ready to stand up and fight and less likely to hold back. Life's too short to hold back.
