I'm really disappointed that it's going to be released exclusively (apparently) on vinyl. Why?
Vinyl isn't a good recording format. It was, but its time has passed. From a technical point of view, it's no better than a well encoded 128kbps MP3. Why?
Vinyl doesn't keep higher frequencies, contrary to what people think. Just like FM radio and MP3 at 128kbps, it cuts off frequencies higher than about 15kHz. And the "warm" bass sound is in fact caused by resonance of the needle. Plus the noise and the brickwall limiting. THE NOISE THOUGH. Digital media has no more noise than what was recorded. Also, vinyl has no treble at all, it's all added on the player with an equalisation (search RIAA preamps for an explanation).
People think vinyl is "cool" and that it sounds "better", but it's not true - it's just a good example of the placebo effect. Rant over.
I seriously hope that the label sees sense and releases it on CD/DVD or as a FLAC digital download, too.

The artwork looks beautiful! I wonder if the intro one is the complete song, I remember reading Amy's post on EvClub about it being a half complete song. So songs that will (probably) be on the B-sides album are Farther Away Missing Breathe No More The Last Song I'm Wasting on You If You Don't Mind Together Again Disappear Secret Door New Way to Bleed Say You Will Intro 2009 Even in Death 2016 Very unlikely but It would be awesome if the electronic version of Made of Stone is on there as well as the harp version of My Heart is Broken. I seriously hope that some new songs that we've never heard make it too (Your Love, Lillywhite material), or some even older material like from Sound Asleep and the EP(super duper doubtful but hey Ultimate Collection could mean EVERYTHING). Give Unto Me is one of my all time favorites oldies, and hearing a super quality version of it on vinyl would be beyond epic. I'm really disappointed that it's going to be released exclusively (apparently) on vinyl. Why? Vinyl isn't a good recording format. It was, but its time has passed. Vinyls are selling more now than CDs and a box set like this might not sell at the price point to typical fans of the band. I can totally see an average fan today walk in a record store see two versions of the set and pick up the vinyl over the CD (and if there was just a CD set.. I don't see them buying it at all)...especially with teenagers today. I also think that vinyls are pain in the ass(I don't own a record player and might not even get one for it) but in their defense they are great for displaying and collections because of their bold and big box art. That is the main reason why I am still buying it. I mean we technically have all the songs on it (if it's all the songs we think) besides the new Even in Death and intro....which I am sure a fan will rip and put on Youtube if the band doesn't. Anyways sidenote: I am also predicting Mr. David H. will be including on the new Even in Death like miss Joanna has said based on his little hint he tweeted me a while back...and yes I still fan girl over that one.

I'm also disappointed that it's vinyl only. Hopefully they will release the new stuff as a digital download too. I bet it's very pretty to look at though, so I'm happy for you guys. Go get it! Btw, am I the only one who has this "final" vibe about this box? Just the way it says "the ultimate collection" and the way Amy went all out on this one, as if this is the last Ev product to come. But maybe it's just marketing or music business language.

I'm definitely getting the boxset, as I totally love vinyls! The problem is I'm really afraid of the cost of shipping and taxes, I think my parents are going to kill me! I'm really disappointed that it's going to be released exclusively (apparently) on vinyl. Why? Vinyl isn't a good recording format. It was, but its time has passed. (Source: I'm a broadcast/audio engineer) Although technically vinyls are old and outdated and don't produce the best sound, I believe that in the heart of a music fan and especially when it comes to your all-time-favourite band, vinyls are something unique and much more beautiful than normal CDs, even if you don't own a player. I am buying this cause I always dreamt of having all the Ev albums on vinyl and it's happening at once, so I'm not missing out, especially if it's a limited edition. I totally understand your point, but I don't think that what you hear matters in this case, what you feel does <3 Posts merged. Use 'Edit' if you want to add more info. Thanks! - Rark (:

I have always been very confident that Evanescence would return one day, sooner or later, but this 'ultimate collection' does leave me with the feeling that this might be the last thing to come... Like closure... and I don't like that. Or it's just a way of ending that era, and moving on to a new one with lots of new cool music (Evanescence unlimited)

(Source: I'm a broadcast/audio engineer) For me, personally, it's not so much about the sound as the overall experience. CDs are pretty good in this respect and a CD collection would have done me, but MP3s, streaming and downloading just kills the simple pleasure of sitting, listening to an album from start to finish, admiring the album artwork how it was originally intended and losing yourself in the pages of CD liner notes or the reverse side of a Vinyl sleeve. You can look at an image of the album cover on a smartphone or desktop computer, but it really isn't the same as having something tangible and real. The joy of vinyls is that the artwork is that much bigger, because it has to be, that and the imperfections you've outlined (the noise/crackles/scratches etc.) really evoke a kind of nostalgia. Granted, it's not for everyone, but it is pretty special for those it is.

Metallica did a box set like this back in the 90s. My dad has it, it's really cool. With that said, I don't think this is the end. Maybe just a way for Ev to make more money since they're not doing anything right now.

I posted a link in the Amy news thread but I think this quote from the article can finally put all those "Evanescence is dead" vibes to rest.

Granted, it's not for everyone, but it is pretty special for those it is. That's exactly why I still buy CDs (or DVDs, as they're 24-bit and have a lower digital noise floor). The only bad thing about the imperfections is that they get worse over time (unless, like very few people, you do things like properly clean the record after playing it). I do love the nostalgia feeling, but (unlike digital) more or less all analogue recordings degrade over time and there's nothing you can do about it. If there was a fair compromise between that combined the best of the full-size artwork and lossless digital versions that I could sit and listen to through studio monitors, I'd be happy. Something sized like this, perhaps? I wonder if the Origin pressing will have the hidden track

The last part, I mean. Evanescence ending (for real) is...I can't fully accept that? lol I mean, Evanescence's Ev3 being the final album...I just can't accept that :/ Starting with an album like "Fallen" to end on a loud guitar driven (to the point of almost drowning out Amy's vocals) album...no. Anyway, back on topic! I really hope the b-sides get released digitally!

I've said this before, but I firmly believe that Evanescence won't simply 'end' in the same way a lot of bands shake hands and call it a day. As depressing as the thought is, I truly believe that it will only come to an end when Amy dies. The music is too heavily entwined with her as a musician and she'll always need that outlet for her darker/heavier music. That's not to say that the possibility of their being no more Evanescence albums isn't a real one, it's just very, very unlikely to my mind.
