I was watching the Nissan Live Sets performance on YouTube and for some reason I don't quite understand, I scrolled down to read the comments. There was one particular comment that accused Amy of using pitch correction: The lipsyncing part is obviously ridiculous, but since I'm not that well-rounded with music technicalities I'm not quite sure about the pitch correction part. Does anyone else hear it or is this guy just talking out of his ass?
Here's the performance in question:

I think we can safely say that Amy does not use pitch correction. If shes sick, tired or had trouble with her throat, you can definately hear it in her performance. If she had used pitch correction she would sound perfect all the time. As for the lack of ambient/crowd bleed from her mic. Thats because when they do a professional recording the mic and instruments are being directly recorded from the source, it's the same on any live streams you watch for that exact reason.

This is also why the vocals are mixed terribly, heh, as they sound unnatural in their surroundings... But it is clearly live singing (she totally croaks a couple of times in CMWYS), but it wouldn't surprise me if there was pitch correction on her mic. There are a couple of moments where some funny noises slip in that could be bad pitch correction.

I always thought for sure there was some pitch correction used on the Nissan performance. What other explanation would there be for those really weird sounding notes? That's the only time I can recall it sounding like it was used and I always assumed it was because Nissan/Yahoo/whoever insisted on it. But I've never thought she used it in any other concerts or performances.

I don't know about the Nissan performance but I don't think she does because let's be honest, Amy has had some horrible sounding performances when she tries to hit the high notes some nights so why wouldn't she use it all the time

Perhaps she was made to use pitch correction for this performance. I mean, Nightwish had to lip synch a live performance of Amaranth because the show wouldn't have them play unless it sounded perfect. Maybe Yahoo! wanted Amy to use pitch correction because her voice didn't sound up to par when she was rehearsing?
As for everyone other live performance, I don't think she uses pitch correction. I wouldn't put it past her in the studio, though, because as awesome as her voice is after all those years of resting, we still know that Wind-Up is a butthole and if they can cut down the studio time, they most likely will.

I'm pretty sure she used pitch correction on the TOD Zepp performance and the Nissan performance, both were recorded professionally though, so they probably made her use one just like how some shows insist that singers lip sync. Other that that, I don't think she use pitch correction. Amy actually commented on a question regarding lip syncing and using backing tracks on EvClub (I believe), I don't recall whether Amy mentioned something about using pitch correction in general though.
As for the YouTube comment, it's a professionally recorded video and a not a bootleg video so obviously they're going to "mute" the crowd and put Amy's vocals to the forefront during the performance. As for the lip syncing claim, well that sure is false. If she was lip syncing why would they need to use a pitch correction? Even if she was lip syncing to a pre-recorded live vocals, they wouldn't need to use pitch correction since they would probably have her sing the songs twice, thrice or more and they would stitch the perfect notes together. Supposed, didn't they perform Missing twice because she wasn't happy with the result of the first one? That alone proves that she wasn't lip syncing.

There's definitely pitch correction on this performance, however it's possible that it was put on for the recording- so the crowd may have got normal Amy, and the autotune was for the video's sake.
As for autotune in general, I have never heard any of it on any live concert videos. According to Dave Fortman (producer/mix engineer for Fallen & TOD) autotune was used all over Fallen and not at all on TOD, he said something about Amy 'singing her heart out' on TOD which is pretty cool. I think I can hear some on a few bits on Evanescence but very minimally.

Ughh... Its called using a good quality condenser mic that has a Cardioid(heart shaped) polar pattern. it eliminates the sounds from the back an sides.
Her voice is probably being compressed and boosted so it can be heard over the drums and guitars.... they are louder. i think what is being mistaken for pitch correction is really her voice hitting the threshold on the compressor possibly they added attack to her voice? idk Just sounds some ones stuffed up a little with mixing.
Im telling you now theres no way to do live pitch correction that accurate we all have heard amy stuff up on live performances and thats totally fine cause no one is 100% perfect ....
also don't mistake auto Tune for Pitch correction...

I read on the old EvThreads, or maybe it was EvBoard, that Yahoo! made Amy use a pitch correction or auto-tunned mic for this performance. There was also that Spain performance of BMTL where the venue turned off the live feed and used the album version while they were performing. fartheraway: Can you provide the link to that Dave Fortman interview?

Seriously, the freakin' vocals-only track of Lithium may very well be the best her voice has ever sounded across all the albums. What parts of Evanescence do you hear it on? I can't really think of any off the top of my head, but I never pay much attention to it... Perhaps the backing vocals in Swimming Home.

There's definitely pitch correction on this performance. The OP used great examples to show that, but she's certainly not lip-syncing.
I've never heard Ev use pitch correction in any other performance, but it's not uncommon for a venue/agent to force an artist to use it.

I've never liked these performances for that reason. She sounds nasally, and just really off... surely her real voice is better than that.

Someone posted in the youtube comments that Amy has only lip-synched once in her life and she doesn't feel good about it. Does anyone know what performance that was? I really want to see it.
