The title wouldn't let me finish my question properly. I know David Campbell is credited with orchestral arrangements and consultation in Evanescence's albums but what's the extent of the band's involvement in the orchestral parts of their music? Or do they entirely rely on Campbell's arrangements and production instead? What's your opinion?

I was just thinking about this today. I'm sure Amy probably says "I want it to sound like this_____" and then the orchestra people just go with it. I love the strings in Evs music! I wish they played a larger part, though.

In the Fallen book, it says that all strings were arranged by David Campbell and David Hodges except track 4. That arrangement was by Graeme Revell.
In TOD, orchestral arrangements by David Campbell.
Ev3 lists David Campbell as a string consultant. I'm pretty sure Amy said in an interview that she arranged the string for this album.

That makes sense as it seems like the strings arrangements on Fallen and TOD have a more polished/experienced sound to them... But the strings on Ev3 are more emotionally significant in the music, I think, but sound a tad more amateurish from a composition point of view. That said, I prefer the strings of Ev3 to the previous albums, but only for three specific moments: A short and quiet cello melody in one of the verses of The Change, all of MHIB, and Erase This (which, of course, has the most significant strings moment of the album)...

Ehm... Secret Door? Please? To me Secret Door has the most poignant string moment of the album in the instrumental solo, THEN comes Erase This' melody in the middle eight. Owright? I was just wondering this the other day, I actually do it a lot but never knew there existed a thread about it. All this time I had come to the conclusion that maybe Amy during TOD and David (Hodges) with Fallen made sort of a demo-ish string arrangement with keyboards and protools and then handed it over to David (Campbell) to make the full, professional thing. Maybe that was just me having wishful thinking about the involvement of e band in that part. Your resolution taking on what the booklets said make a lot of sense. I had noticed the whole "Strings Consultant" thing , it did get my attention but in all honesty I couldn't figure for the life of me what it meant and I'm pretty pleased to know Amy worked it this time. Must have been a lot of fun to do taking her enthusiasm towards film scoring. Would love to get a hold on that interview where she actually said it, tough. Talking about Secret Door, I really loved her work on that, it was like very thought-out which may explain the rather simple-ness (I really should stop making up words) of the entire piece. The harp is very simplistic as is the overall composition, but it works beautifully for the way it is crafted. I still think she should have relaxed her vocal strings a little during the chorus like in the verses or the acoustic version, and a little bit of acoustic guitar (without the strumming in the chorus, though) would have helped to add a certain flavor to the song, but I am, in fact, satisfied. The strings have a lot of personality cause they are never the same same. It starts with only cello, to ad a bit of violin during the second verse and it starts to explode at the second chorus only to reach its climax with the solo, and then in the last chorus it's also slightly different than the previous one. Well done, Amers, you, eargasmicly emotional composer, you.

I don't quite remember where Amy said about the strings. I do remember though that it was an interview where she was talking about the strings being recorded and in that room is where she cries what she hears it all coming together. UGH! I gotta find it now... Okay, this is NOT the interview but in this one is hints that Dave Campbell did the strings... So, at 9:13 and 9:45.

Ehm... Secret Door? Please? To me Secret Door has the most poignant string moment of the album in the instrumental solo, THEN comes Erase This' melody in the middle eight. Owright? Eh, I disagree. To me, Secret Door was a disappointment in the strings department in the sense that it is all very beautiful and all very much welcome, but that it isn't anything more than that. That moment is very flat in my ears, not at all poignant. The melody doesn't.... Hmm... It doesn't resonate quite as strongly. I've always found it more decorative than emotionally satisfying. I can say that of the entire song, actually. The acoustic performance was better in that respect... It's also perhaps a little too film-esque, to the point that if you put it in any given fantasy movie (without Amy's vocals) it wouldn't be special in the slightest. Now I wish someone would have asked her in one of those "bombard Amy Lee with your dumb questions' things if she worked with him on the strings or if he did it all himself. Still, since the cello in Erase This follows the piano (and the violins do a slight variation of the same melody), perhaps she did at least write the melody in that song.

I never actually knew how to respond to that, therefore I didn't. Ahem, Let's agree to disagree? Although I did admit from the begining the simplicty of Secret Door, I just think that it works.

I never agree to disagree. You're wrong and you should feel bad about it. I'm just kidding, of course, but I still don't agree to disagree. 'tis not the simplicity of Secret Door that betrays it... 'tis the heavy film influence. So..... Fuck you. I'm kidding again, hehehe.... Have a nice day! Kidding again, I hope your day is horrible and I hate you. ;D

Why don't you go suck a f*ck? Still, I wonder how far can we carry on this thread without new information, are there other things to discuss on the subject?

Not really Ev, but Amy is credited for doing the string arrangements on Broken.

^ Good news everyone, that's the only thing I like about that song. Why don't you go suck a f*ck? How in the... I wouldn't know where to begin. Still, I wonder how far can we carry on this thread without new information, are there other things to discuss on the subject? There's always more things to discuss. Erase This, for example, is always good. Always.
