Evanescence's 'The Chain' Is Latest Charted Cover of Fleetwood Mac Classic
12/4/2019 by Kevin Rutherford
The act's new remake hits No. 9 on Hot Rock Songs.
Evanescence is the latest act to provide its take on Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain," and the hard rockers' version is off to a strong start on Billboard's charts.
Evanescence's "The Chain" debuts at No. 1 on the Rock Digital Song Sales list dated Dec. 7, selling 9,000 downloads in the week ending Nov. 28, according to Nielsen Music.
The Amy Lee-led act lands its first leader on Rock Digital Song Sales, which began in 2010. "What You Want," the first single from the band's then-comeback, and self-titled, 2011 album, started at a prior No. 4 best that August.
Additionally, "The Chain" bows as the top debut, at No. 9, on the multi-metric Hot Rock Songs chart, marking Evanescence's first top 10 on the list, which began in 2009 (after the act's commercial breakthrough with its "Bring Me to Life," a No. 5 Billboard Hot 100 hit in 2003).
Evanescence's version of "The Chain" isn't the only rendition of the song to chart in 2019. The Highwomen recorded the song for the movie The Kitchen, and the track reached No. 28 on the Adult Alternative Songs airplay chart dated Oct. 5. (Evanescence's cover of the song is for the video game Gears 5, the latest in Xbox's Gears of War series.)
In fact, Evanescence's isn't the only charted hard rock cover of "The Chain." In 2011, Three Days Grace's version hit No. 45 on Rock Digital Song Sales, while a redo by Tantric reached multiple radio charts in 2004, including No. 36 on Mainstream Rock Songs.
All that for an original with a small chart footprint overall. Fleetwood Mac's version was not released as a single upon its release on 1977's Rumours; as such, it has never reached the Billboard Hot 100 despite being one of the band's most well-known songs. Twenty years after its initial release, a live version reached Mainstream Rock Songs (No. 30, 1997), and the original has surfaced on Rock Digital Song Sales, including at No. 6 in May 2017 following its inclusion on the soundtrack to Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2.
To date, Fleetwood Mac's original has drawn a robust 336.6 million U.S. streams and sold 939,000 downloads.
Evanescence's "The Chain" is the third cover song to reach No. 1 on Rock Digital Song Sales in 2019, following one-week reigns each for Marilyn Manson's "God's Gonna Cut You Down" (a traditional folk song; Nov. 2) and Five Finger Death Punch's "Blue on Black," featuring Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Brantley Gilbert and Brian May (original by the Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band; April 27).
Comparatively, one cover ruled the list in 2018: Bad Wolves' rendition of The Cranberries' "Zombie" (March 17, 2018).
