Jamie: You said something in the shoutbox about the strings on Fallen being mostly synth. I don't understand how you're able to tell that from the "multitracks" but Dave Campbell was the arranger for the strings on Fallen, except for on My Immortal.

They're great, except for at around 1:30 (in the string score, remember it has like a 3 second silence at the start of every track). The C B transition isn't really, well, realistic, and Violin II there sounds reeeally synthesised (it doesnt even sound like a string instrument anymore). It very well may just be that part was synthesised (maybe it was a late addition?), since the rest sounds more or less real in comparison. I take back the mostly synth comment, but there's definitely some synth in there.

It's the only multitrack from Fallen I have here. My bad I forgot what thread I was posting in hahah. Strings on MI sound pretty real to me:)

Strings on MI sound pretty real to me:) The strings sound real to me on BMTL just edited so they fit with the song better. I see what you mean on the BMTL track but I'm sure some of the strings for some songs are synth because it would just make it easier to edit and add effects; especially at that stutter-y spot around 1:39 (BMTL). You can't really make an assumption like this based off of just one multi track though.

You can't really make an assumption like this based off of just one multi track though. Had another close listen. The stuttery part sounds "real" to me though. But I'm still certain there's a bit of synth around the 1:30 mark on at least one of the violins. Some of the cello notes don't really sound real either (2:45 - 2:50), no expert/professional would play the cello like that. Ever. There are quite a few "skips" where some rests were probably cut out, yeah. It includes the synths probably because the string score was made by someone else, and exported as an MP3 or something for the engineer. Adding post-production effects to a recorded track is probably easier than to a midi one (you can manipulate the track directly, which is more complex if you're already generating lots of sounds from midi) - you can also be harsher on your edits and potentially less destructive that way. The stutter sounds honestly like the mixing engineer added a gate (fancy engineer-y term for a mute switch) that was synced up to the score, though. I'm not sure about the rest of the album - synth strings that are blended with real instruments are really hard to pick out, hence why they're used sooo often The strings (especially the cellos compared to BMTL) on Tourniquet, Imaginary, Hello, Whisper and MI sound real enough. (Partial source: I'm a broadcast engineer/violinist! )

Not a particularly great day for Amy voice-wise, but I really love the way all of them did BMTL at this acoustic session, including Amy. Really good performance and BMTL sounds so great this way. It's refreshing from the traditional version that has been played so much.
I think the band should make on a Fallen anniversary an acoustic version of the album and release it somewhere. Or do a live acoustic show.

^ I agree with you guys, there's just something about this album. I always thought that maybe it's the nostalgia. Fallen was my first Evie album that I bought back in 2005, and it introduced me to so much amazing music and helped me though less-than-wonderful times. It's more personal to me that way, but then again... musically and lyrically, there's just something about Fallen... Wanted to quote this... The album is at no.2 on iTunes US top 200. It's selling for $4.99. The Open Door managed to climb to 39 and Lost Whispers and Synthesis made an appearance in the top 200.

I don’t think Hello gets nearly enough appreciation off this album. Just a random thought from me.

arlieimperfection I agree, but then I'm also aware that Amy's songs about her sister hold a lot of personal meaning for me so I probably love them more for that reason.

arlieimperfection I was just talking about that in the What Are You Listening To thread! It's a lot simpler than most Ev songs but Jesus Lord it's so sad and really beautifully done. Rarkphoenix *hugs*

Hello was my first Ev song back in 2009. It's such a significant song in my personal history for that reason, since it was the beginning of me developing my own taste in music. The piano and the cello solo <3 Shin I also noticed that Fallen is currently #2 on the iTunes Charts. I wonder why??

I'm just learning that Ben wrote the entirety of My Immortal, lyrically at least. Did Amy write the rest of the songs on Fallen by herself?
