KERRANG REVIEW
For the past, let’s call it seven years, it’s almost become Amy Lee’s full-time job to field one question over and over again: “Where’s the new Evanescence album?!” And oh how she has fielded it. She took time out to raise a child and it was, “Where’s the new Evanescence album?!” She proved her credentials as a film composer with her brilliant Aftermath outing in 2014 and it was, “Where’s the new Evanescence album?!” Even when the group released their Synthesis record in 2017, featuring gorgeous orchestral reworkings of their back catalogue, that question still echoed ad infinitum: “WHERE’S THE NEW EVANESCENCE ALBUM?!”
The desperation charging this line of inquisition was, of course, understandable: the group’s last original studio record was their self-titled release way back in 2011. Since then, we’ve had everything from tours to archival deep digging (their Ultimate Collection 2016 boxset included the Lost Whispers and Origins rarities collections), an Amy Lee children’s album, and even a Fleetwood Mac cover for Gears Of War 5. Everything, in fact, but a new album. And then April 17 came along…
“We promised you a new album in 2020 and we won’t let anything stop us,” Evanescence tweeted. “We are proud to begin sharing our new album The Bitter Truth with you, one piece at a time…” Which brings us to Wasted On You: the long-long-loooong-awaited first single from the band’s new album. It’s finally here, people. And it doesn’t disappoint. The pressing thing to note is that, as far as first strikes go, this is a very different approach from Evanescence. Wasted On You’s slow-boil tension contrasts starkly with the maximalist philosophy of previous lead singles like Bring Me To Life, Call Me When You’re Sober and What You Want. Perhaps liberated by their new way of unveiling the album “one piece at a time”, they’ve going not for the jugular here, but rather an incisive snip of the heartstrings. What may at first sound comparatively understated for them is actually anything but. Make no mistake: it takes a lot of confidence to make your grand comeback sound so slowburn and graceful.
As far as opening gambits go, the lyrics, ‘I don’t need drugs, I’m already six feet low’ serve as a perfect primer for what follows: a sombre meditation on romantic numbness. Musically, this is part lullaby, part gothic power ballad – boasting haunting piano passages bolstered with the occasional eruption of burning distortion. If we’re talking the wider Evanescence canon, it’s a song that could nestle in quite nicely between Lithium and Lost In Paradise in a live set.
Above all else, however, it is – perhaps unsurprisingly at this point – Amy Lee’s voice and sorrowful delivery that remains at centre stage. Just check out her epic sustained note toward the end – it’s the crowning moment on a song that serves as a potent reminder as to why Evanescence have enjoyed life long after releasing Bring Me To Life. Mature, dark and beautiful, Wasted On You is a triumphant return.

Well, I am loving the new song. It's dreamy yet not, I can definitely see why people are saying it sounds like Swimming Home and the Secret Door. It's very Evanescence-y yet new. Like seeing an old friend who looks almost the same, but something's changed and you can't quite put your finger on it. Can't wait to see what else they've created!
Updated because Video:
This video gave me ALL the emotions. It's got some powerful imagery. Bits of it took me back to Everybody's Fool. I love getting glimpses of everyone's families and such. I think they did an excellent job with this.

Okay, I'm going to listen to it a few more times before forming my thoughts properly because right now I'm an emotional wreck. But holy f*** that was everything I wanted and more <3

The part with the candle and necklaces at Tim's...was it a tribute to Alyssa ?

But holy f*** that was everything I wanted and more <3 Oh yeah you were waiting for the video to hear the song! how was it man? Absolutely phenomenal. I can see why some people were a bit hit and miss about the intro, but it definitely needs that contrast. Once it all kicks in though, bam. And the guitar tone is just perfect for me. I'm hearing a shed load of Orange amplification mixed with Amy's vocals and it's the best thing in the world. And the video is so relatable right now. I love how it was actually quite funny in places too (Will on his chopper was my personal highlight XD). Definitely a whirlwind of emotions.

Was waiting for the video too, and oh my gooood. It sounds totally different than what I was expecting but oh my god I love it. My new song on the fav Ev songs list, ditto. I can't wait for the new album! Does anyone else hear a bit of an Origin theme going in the bridge? Mixed with TOD era?
Also, what happened to Stella? Does Amy only have Shermie now? (You can see he's getting super old! He must be at least 13-14 years old now?)

I can't help but think what the video might of been if CV-19 hadn't of happened. You never know the may turn it into a full on music video later in the year. I'm really impressed with what they all came up with while isolating though.

LOOOOVE the video!!! They really knocked it put of the park considering the way they had to work. Raw, intimate and real. So glad PR kept it simple without a bunch of overlays and effects.
And go ahead and tell me Ev are has beens and no one cares. Over 50k view in less than 30 minutes!

It fits the new aesthetic!

This song deserved a better video, fuck 👑 really. This video made me think it would be interesting if they filmed themselves during all the recording process and release it later as a documentary. Could be interesting.

It's perfect, because they can't do much, so they basically had to make a video about that... which we can all relate to right now. This is such a unique and special moment in that way. We all can 'feel' music in different ways, but this song with this specific video at this time is something a lot of us are going to connect with in almost the exact same way. I don't think it could ever happen like that again.
I was so excited to see Tim's family. Dani and the kids are so beautiful. <3 Also, Amy sing-yelling at the computer is a MOOD. I'm so in love with this band.
