I'm going to post my thoughts/interpretation on this: I said previously that I think the second part of the song is about Wind-up, I still stand by that. People were also mentioning how "The In-Between" sounds like "Hello". I think part of the song is also perhaps about Amy's sister & how it affected her. I think it makes sense going with the video. I think this is about Amy saying, "you know, I've obviously dealt with these type of issues also and you guys have as well". So she's saying don't give up or surrender. We're in this together. I don't know, this is what I get from it at least. It's Amy's feelings (obviously, lol). But anyways, like I said these are just my thoughts. Also, the part where Amy sings "Do you really know the weight of the words you say" sounds the electronic part behind it is mimicking her.

Ok here is my synopses:
I think the little girl is meant to represent Amy and all the swirling colors and stuff is like that is the turmoil that Amy's mind and emotions have went through. Then when the girl is hugged by Amy and "merges" into her, it's like Amy overcoming the pain and resolving to never give up.
Haha, that's probably lame.

^I don't think it's lame!
My mom heard Imperfection on the radio today and acted like I haven't heard it yet. When I revealed how long we've had the audio, she was like, "NO. I HEARD IT FIRST." XD Okay, whatever! Lol

This video has grown on me a lot, and now I actually enjoy it and find it very interesting. And I just envy how naturally she always performs in water - the shots are super classy and mesmerizing.
It's funny how much a proper video can do to a song's popularity. The video reached a million views in less than a week, and now it has more views than the original non-video upload. (I know they uploaded it into two accounts but still.)
Btw, one thing that bothers me is that Amy has given up her beautiful wedding ring with a big stone. I noticed that already a year ago but remembered it again due to the bus stop scene where her hands are shown. I understand it must be much easier to have a flat ring when you have a kid, but could she wear it in the pics at least? !!!JOKE ALERT!!!: If someone goes to the vip thingy, could you please ask her to put it back on?! LMAO.

At first I didn't really like the video. I found it beautiful but it didn't make any sense too me. I felt the second part was to all over the place, but it grows on me, especially this we have some explanation about it. I'm just a little sad that we don't see much the rest of the band except in the background and yet even there we see more of Amy. It's HER wedding ring. SHE decide when to wear it. We have no business to ask to put it back on. I get it a little, I like that ring too but it's the kind of personal thing that doesn't concern us at all.

Either way, it's not a wedding ring... It's her ENGAGEMENT ring. Many women who have larger rings with larger stones, which mean larger and SHARPER prongs to keep the stone in the metal, take them off and just wear their wedding band after having a child. I know my engagement ring has really sharp prongs. I've gotten myself and my fiance good with them a couple times and even drew blood from him once. Also, Amy may have gained some weight and it may not fit her finger anymore and she may not have wanted to get it resized as, if I remember correctly, it's an antique ring.

The song as well as the video have both been out for a while, and I haven't been around recently, but I have been listening and watching on repeat. I have one short word to describe this piece: wow. Upon hearing Imperfection for the first time, as I listened to the verse I thought it sounded rather new and interesting. As this was only my first listen I wasn't sure what to think but then the song got to the chorus, and I immediately heard my good old Ev. Not to imply that I don't like the sound of the verses, but it was something that at first caught me a little off guard. However, this combination of both old and new is wonderful. Everything about this song is so great, the verses, the chorus, the bridge, the lyrics - I especially relate to the lyrics. I like how Amy mentioned the symbolism of the video and how she is speaking to her "old self". I can understand where she is coming from, if I had the chance to say something to my past self, I would say a lot. "So many things I would have told you if I knew that I was never gonna see you again" - makes sense, as you never really notice when your "old self" becomes old, so you only realise a long time later how much you have changed and how that old self is no longer there. I feel like this song could be interpreted as speaking to one's past self, a younger self, a self which may have been troubled and was ready to give up("don't you dare surrender"). If that past self did give up, then they would never go on to see themselves grow as a person and it would forever be a mystery wandering around never to be known of("don't leave me(present self) here without you(the past self needed to grow)"). The present self has by now gone through so much shit that they have seen more than their past self("The world's a little more fucked up every day" - I sense some sass in Amy's voice in this part, as if she was saying suck it up, life's gonna get harder anyway) and they see that what the past self thinks is not the end of the world and dare I say, the past self could be a little overdramatic even, perhaps not understanding that their issue probably is not as terrible as they perceive it to be("you've got an ego to feed", "you counterfeit composure", "do you really know the weight of the words you say?") With that, it sounds like the present self is aware that the past self does not realise that things will probably get worse and bad things will happen in order for them to grow into this stronger, present self. The present self feels a sympathy towards the past self and wishes they could eliminate that past pain("I'm gonna save you from it, together we'll outrun it, just don't give into the fear", "I wanna lift you up into the light that you deserve", "I wanna take your pain into myself so you won't hurt", "we are alive", etc.). I feel like it is a mix of sympathy(wanting to take the pain away and understanding the pain as bad things have happened to this present self as well), anger(the effective anger/sass in Amy's voice in some parts of the song), and maybe, tying into the anger, annoyance(Ego to feed, "too late to rise above it") but not the bad kind of annoyance, rather the "ugh, I want you to just be okay" type of annoyance. I would put all of this under an umbrella and name the umbrella "determination to save oneself" for lack of a better, more creative title. Altogether, the anger and annoyance creates an image of imperfection in the past self, but realising that it's inevitable and that to the past self their pain is as bad as it can get, it's perfection. Hence, perfect imperfection... Aaagh, I should stop, before I dissect this song further... Regardless, this song is perfect(pun slightly intended.) I love it and I think it's a masterpiece. I also agree with Danny that it is perfect to drive to, especially when you're driving fast during a sunset.

The good thing of reading different people's analysis about a song is that they make you notice things you haven't noticed before and help you to look at things from different angles. and this only reveals more and more that how well that song and its lyrics are written and how deep and thoughtful it is! which is not very surprising when it's for an evanescence song. thank you BlackenTheDay. it was a great read!

princeofpersia That's what I love about Ev. There can be many meanings related to one song. It's like that with Imperfection; my interpretation of it isn't even the only interpretation I could think of. I think it's so interesting how others will see the song similarly or differently. It's wonderful.

A lot of really interesting analyses and interpretation of the song and video in this thread. It made me love the song more.
When I first heard this song I must admit I was a bit upset that I didn't like it. I really wanted to, I just didn't hear the Evanescence I wanted. Then I read what Amy had written about the song and heard the pain in the song and there it was, my good old Evanescence. Then the song really grew on me and now it's one of my favourites.
I love the message this song has, to 'never stop fighting for your life'. I've already read messages from people saying this song saved their life, and that's really incredible. Her lyrics and the way she delivers them has helped so many people going through hard times (me included) and it really makes what she does really important, and so much more than just entertainment. I wonder how many lives Amy has saved.

well Amy said this song is about two things, I think it's obvious that the first verse is about loss/depression/suicidal thoughts, I can't help but feel that the second verse is on a feminist note - "the way you look us over --- the world is on our shoulders, do you really know the weight of the words you say?" also "the little girl's got a grenade", I think this is Amy's anger release on sexism (which is very much present in music industry), "I'm gonna lift you up into the light that you deserve" souds like Amy's message to all girls who struggle to break through with music, since she must have experienced troubles in this area too
any thoughts on that?
