I'm stuck on "Unraveling" + "Imaginary". There's just something so dark and medieval and classical about that 2-minute interlude that is overwhelmingly captivating. It reminds me of REALLY old school Ev, Fallen or even pre-Fallen. At first, I'll admit, "Imaginary" wasn't my favorite, not to say it was bad it just didn't grab me, but each listen is one more paint stroke added to the overall image and it gets clearer and clearer to me what the band was going for with this one. I like that it's not totally bombastic, at least up until the bridge. I'm getting a very groovy, "Origin" vibe from it. One member said it was an experience, and I agree 6265416565165168%.

Yes, those are on all the BMG labeled ones. What is the difference? Is by region or distributor?

I know the music inside is what matters, but as I said it was disappointing to have such a beautiful package and design be butchered by that oversight.

At this very moment, I am listening to the new album on Youtube (although I have a digital download that my brother will have to help me with) and I have to say I love what I hear! I even love the picture of Amy on the cover. I hope you all are loving Synthesis as much as me!

Hands down to Ev for releasing this kind of album! All songs are good and very soothing to listen! I'm speechless.

I went and bought it making sure it had the misprint on it for collecting purposes, so I completely understand!

I completely agree and I find Unravelling so melancholic. One cannot simply listen to Imaginary without playing Unravellng first.

first impression: GOING NUTS OVER THIS! I was blown away by most of the songs I heard (haven't listened to some still), some definitely sound better than the original I might say, to me at least. a bit disappointed about bmtl and mhib, might grow on me later though, who knows.

My best friend is a pop music enthusiast, though does like some Evanescence here and there. On release day, he went to a store and bought both Taylor Swift's new album and Synthesis. He and I then had the following conversation, inspired by a tweet someone (wish I could remember who) wrote integrating T. Swift lyrics into our Synthesis excitement: Me: So have you listened to Synthesis yet? Him: Not yet, just Taylor so far. Me: AHEM. Him: Rachel, I'm gay. Me: I get that. But we were not junior captains. We were on the bleachers. AND KIDS ON THE BLEACHERS LISTEN TO EVANESCENCE. But anyway he seemed to like Synthesis. He was really pleased that Amy didn't overhype this kind of project and we got exactly what she said we'd get: Part classical, part electronic reworkings.

Never Go Back, Lacrymosa and End of the Dream are currently my favourites on Synthesis. My neighbours are probably getting really annoyed with me singing "Blame it on meeeeee!" every few seconds.
I really like what they've done with My Heart is Broken. It was one of my favourites when self-titled was released back in 2011, but since then it's gotten a bit boring. The new version has reinvigorated it for me. The bridge is much better now with just the piano and no vocals.

I just went to a couple stores that sell CDs in the UK and Synthesis is nowhere to be seen! I managed to track it down in HMV and they were actually playing HiLo (although the speaker was broken and cracking so it was killing the song). Anyone thinking that Ev won't even crack the Top 100? Ev's last album managed to get to #4 on the main chart without promotion

Ev's last album managed to get to #4 on the main chart without promotion Physical copies of their last album were more widely available than Synthesis is, so it's not going to sell as much. I remember that the last album was actually at #1 in the UK midweek charts but was overtaken by albums with more promotion by the end of the week. I would have thought that Synthesis would at least crack the Top 100 album chart, but I've just checked the Apple Music UK charts and Synthesis is nowhere to be seen. It's been consistently in the Top 4 Albums on Amazon UK since release but I don't know how many people buy music from Amazon compared to iTunes. Since 2015 the UK Album charts also count how many times tracks from an album are streamed, so that will affect Synthesis' placement in the chart.

It's an absolutely gorgeous album. I knew it would be, but there were some definite surprises. I wasn't expecting to love Secret Door as much as I do, it's never really been that interesting to me but the new groove it has is very effective. Major stand out tracks are End of the Dream, Lacrymosa, My Heart is Broken, Imaginary and Hi-Lo.
Hi-Lo is just beautiful. That instrumental battle after the second chorus is just so epic. It's funny, it feels very much like it could have sat quite comfortably on the Open Door for some reason. It just has that kind of feel to it.
End of the Dream is my absolute favourite. I always liked the original, but I love how they deconstructed it and completely changed the vibe of the song. Plus the little vocal flourishes make my skin crawl.
The only two songs I'm not really feeling are My Immortal and Lost in Paradise. I get it, they're pretty, and not bad by any means ... but they just felt a bit pointless to me. Like, obviously they've made changes to the original, but they don't really feel that different - again, nothing wrong with them, but I could have done without these two songs. I'd have liked to have seen something a bit less predictable.
One song I could never dislike but was a little disappointed in is Your Star. This is one of my favourite Ev songs. Now, some of what they've done is amazing. I love all the mechanical sounds and electronic vocals in the beginning, it's gorgeous. But I feel like the second half of the song loses a lot of the epicness of the original. I get they were probably aiming for more of a lo-fi kind of vibe, and it's still pretty, I still like it, but for my personal taste it kind of lost something - vocally and instrumentally.
I think what surprised me the most is the vocals. There is much less of that intricate, background work that I've come to expect from Amy for many of the songs - and you do get that feeling as someone has said above that it's been recorded almost to reflect a true, live vocal. For just this one project, I think it was an interesting choice.
As a retrospective of the past and a passion project, I think it's been beautifully done and despite my few complaints I'm so glad the band feel comfortable doing something like this. There's no denying how creative this project is, and that makes me very excited for future material.
