xdershiz I don't know what exchange rates they offer at the airport so you can check and decide if it's better to exchange at home or there. Some hotels have exchange machines too but I wouldn't rely on that. Exchanging cash in Japan is generally not the easiest thing and the exchange rates include a hefty commission. Using a credit card here is safe IF (that's a very big if) it works. I've heard plenty of stories about rejected cards. 7-11 ATMs seem to work best with international cards but I'd still take some cash and not risk spending my holiday hungry. Anyway, make sure you leave the airport with some yen because you'll definitely need cash for a ticket to the city.

I heard you can exchange it at the bank (cash wise). Now I don't know if you'd pick the money up from your bank or a bank in Japan. I'm not sure how it works exactly.

Thanks for the input you two! I definitely have to look more into this. I know one of my coworkers has gone to Japan for business multiple times. I'll see what she did. Since j don't know any Japanese, it might be better if I do the exchange over here and not risk getting ripped off Let's hope I can figure out Tokyo's subway system I have it too easy here in Chicago with our simple transit system.

You shouldn't have any problems with the subway system. Especially if you use Hyperdia or one of the most common apps to plan your trip. Different lines are colour coded, which helps you avoid confusion when more than one line uses the same platform, there are signs everywhere so transfers are not an issue and trains are pretty much always on time (if it's even 1 minute late, they will apologise officially to all passengers). Tokyo Metro is big but in no way complicated.

All - I officially got some Yen!!
For those coming from the US, it's probably cheaper to do the exchange from a major bank in your current city. I did the exchange through Chase, with a cost of about .0003 per dollar (or something like that). To give you some perspective, if you traded in $1000, the total fee to do the exchange would $.30
Yes, 30 CENTS. The teller was even surprised lol as was I. This is probably way cheaper than doing the exchange in Japan.

A month ago I needed Hong Kong dollars and the loss compared to the official exchange rate was about 10% of the total amount I exchanged. Greedy bastards. And I must be happy I did it in the city because it was even worse at the airport.

I only live about an hour and 20mins away but will take the train there sometimes. I had to go last week to visit my grandpa in the hospital. I love Chicago. Anyways, now that I'm off topic. I hope that everyone has a great time in Chicago!!

And thanks for the input on Tokyo's trains and app idea, harridan. I feel a little better lol
But yes, chicago's train system is really simple because there's only one connecting/transferring point between all the lines, and that's downtown. It's probably really inefficient, but it it gets the job done

Hopefully someone sees this and responds in time... do I need to bring my passport to the show with me? I am nervous to do so, but I think I remember someone saying that I need to bring it to the show on here earlier...
