Thanks for the info, AeternusAmatorius! I love EvReference, it's such a useful website full of source-based Ev information! It's interesting to know that beep can be heard on other Ev songs, too. I had honestly kinda forgotten about the fact Amy was supposedly a ghost in the video. That was a pretty imaginative idea which, unfortunately, didn't really manage to come across to me. I just had to read about it instead. On top of that, I had also previously read about Ben having dedicated that song, as well as the entire Fallen album to his grandfather, but I hadn't really managed to memorize that yet... :/ And yet ANOTHER thing I had forgotten about was that Mystary EP. Would like to hear it some time. But nuff about all that. Currently listening to the original version of MI, and as shameful as it may sound, I have to admit that must be my first time listening to that version, like, ever. (Got no clue why.) It gives more of a singer-songwriter vibe to me, and it can clearly be heard it's much more simplistic than the latter versions of it. What's special about the original version, though is Amy's sweet, tender and innocent voice. For someone who's never really felt attached to the lyrics, she's done an amazing job even back then. As for Origin's version, I think I like it more compared to the previous one, as it is closer and more similar to the Fallen variations. An advantage to the earlier versions is the key on the verses, which I believe has been lowered on my favourite (band) version. What I personally love on Origin's mid8 is the touching combination between the piano and strings. It cannot really be witnessed on the band version as those instruments have gotten outshined or simply overlapped by the guitars and drums. The additional lyrics on the original version of the track are very beautiful, and still I am too used to the standard ones. On the other hand though, the entire meaning of MI makes much more sense if you add the discarded lines...

One of the coolest accidents ever. It's also heard in Eternal. That's news to me... Where is it in Eternal? Give me a time frame so I know where to look. The beeps are in the beginning aren't they? Right as the song starts.

I'm listening to the oldest version of this song for the first time in years, and I must say, still hate it. Sounds like the piano was a victim of domestic abuse and Amy is just so damn whiny... And THANK GOD the "I'd love to walk away" part was rewritten.... Though, had they released a more polished recording of this version of the song, it never would have been famous, so My Immortal as a whole would be eight times less annoying. Still, given its "rough demo" status, it's immune to true criticism, heh... Especially since they fixed it.

Those are not the same beeps, heh. Oh...that's what I thought...well what are THOSE then? Probably just some sort of sampled beat they downloaded from the internet or that came with some of the equipment they bought. I have one that's extremely similar (perhaps even the same one) that came for free with the sample engine I use... Or, it's just a bunch of separate samples used in the creation of beats... That they then used to create a beat with. You can distinctly separate each individual noise as its own sample when you listen to it.... Of course, I'm not 100% certain of this, but it's most likely the truth.... Either way, it is likely an absolute certainty that they just copy/pasted it throughout the song, hehehe.

And the Origin version of MI doesn't have the strings; that's Fallen track 4 version. You can hear the string arrangements on the Mystary Version, as that one is the band version without the guitars, and slightly different vocals. I always thought those beeps in Eternal were from an electronic sound database thing?

Yeah, that's what I've been planning on doing anyway. Quite excited about it, to say the least. And Jeez, my mind! SO many versions... I'm confused. lol Will get back to this thread once I've given the Mystary EP a try.

Lol. We'll here's a pretty chronological list for you! My Immortal (Piano Vocal) My Immortal (Origin - No Strings, David's "Yeah yeah" more prominent) My Immortal (Fallen - Same as Origin but w/ strings. David's "Yeah yeah" less prominent) My Immortal (Mystary EP version - Band version with slight variation in vocals, and no guitars) My Immortal (Band Version) My Immortal (Band Version - No Strings/Quiet strings) - actually there are strings, they're just very quiet My Immortal (Band Version -Guitars Down) My Immortal (Video Audio) My Immortal (Various acoustic performances and various live performances)

Was that Video Audio version featured on the single or something? Also, what did you actually mean by David's "Yeah yeah"? Were those some sort of back vocals I haven't seemed to notice yet? xD

The video audio is the audio I ripped from the video. It's a bit different from the versions released on the singles. The "Yeah yeah" that David does in MI are in the second and third chorus after "scream" in "When you'd scream I'd fight away all of your fears". These are only found in the "Origin" and "Fallen" versions though. In the lyrics below I have the "yeah yeah" in italics so when you're listening, you can see where I mean. My Immortal: 0:00 – 0:14 I’m so tired of being here Suppressed by all my childish fears And if you have to leave I wish that you would just leave ‘Cause your presence still lingers here And it won’t leave me alone These wounds won’t seem to heal This pain is just too real There’s just too much that time cannot erase When you cried I’d wipe away all of your tears When you’d scream I’d fight away all of your fears And I held your hand through all of these years But you still have all of me 1:24 – 1:35 You used to captivate me By your resonating light But now I’m bound by the life you left behind Your face it haunts my once pleasant dreams Your voice it chased away all the sanity in me These wounds won’t seem to heal This pain is just too real There’s just too much that time cannot erase When you cried I’d wipe away all of your tears When you’d scream (yeah yeah) I’d fight away all of your fears And I held your hand through all of these years But you still have all of me I’ve tried so hard to tell myself that you’re gone But though you’re still with me I’ve been alone all along 3:09 – 3:18 When you cried I’d wipe away all of your tears When you’d scream (yeah yeah) I’d fight away all of your fears And I held your hand through all of these years But you still have all of me All Me All Me All 4:06 – 4:24

Couldn't really hear the 'yeah' parts but I was definitely able to differentiate David's back vocals all along throughout the chorus. They sound like a nice touch, and they fit well, too.

I remember reading somewhere that the Mystary version of MI was recorded for Fallen, but Wind-Up wanted them to tweak and use the Origin version instead. Is there any truth to that? It seems like a really dumb thing to do, considering they already had the album (now Mystary) version recorded, and they re-recorded MI for the single anyways.

It seems like a really dumb thing to do, considering they already had the album (now Mystary) version recorded, and they re-recorded MI for the single anyways. I'm not sure if there is any truth to that, however, it would make sense since the "Origin" version of MI is what got Ev signed to WU in the first place. Here is where it says this on EvRef, though there are no reference points to link to an interview or a statement. Wind-up Records were unhappy with this version and decided that the Origin version was best but with more strings in the background. evanescencereference.info/wiki/index.php?title=My_ImmortalAnd, as I understand it. The Mystary version is the one that was recorded for "Fallen" and was a demo version. Then, as all demos grow, this version grew into what we now call the Band Version. I think the Band Version was already recorded before the release of the album. It wouldn't make sense to go back into the studio after the album was recorded and released. Though this is just my opinion. Correct me if I'm wrong though... Does anyone know when Fallen was re-released to the US with the bonus track (12 track version)?

Oh well, I've just managed to stumble across Canada's iTunes in which they offer Fallen in a 'Bonus Track Version' wherein 'My Immortal' (Alternate Version) has been stated as the 12th track off the record. Apparently, copyright still links back to 2003 with the only difference being that this particular version has been manufactured in Canada for (obviously) Canadian fans. itunes.apple.com/ca/album/fallen-bonus-track-version/id472971075There also happens to be that one version which includes an acoustic performance of MI instead: www.discogs.com/Evanescence-Fallen/release/2993786Those listed as 'Choir [Millenium Choir, The]' are the members of The Millenium Choir on this release.
℗ & © 2003 Wind-up Entertainment, Inc. Distributed in the United States by BMG Distribution, a unit of BMG Entertainment.
Repress is outwardly identical to This Release. Only difference is a new Matrix Number and Track 12 is a Hidden Track. PS: Here's for something interesting to check your Ev knowledge out with: eil.com/shop/PrinterFriendly.asp?Artist31=Evanescence
