This is such a beautiful song and knowing the inspiration behind it, it's even more beautiful.

It's about 9/11, right? It would be amazing if they would do this acoustic, with strings and piano, maybe harp. Such a beautiful song.<3

Holding my last breath3:48 – 4:07 Song: Some Things To Think About/Debate Over -This song was played live and put on the "Anywhere But Home Live CD" as Track #6 (3:52). Song: -As seen on ABH, Alice Meichi Li painted a picture (inspired by My Last Breath) and gave it to Amy on the New York 02/27/04 show; the picture was originally made Dec of 2003 and showed two original characters (Arisu and Hikaru), one of which was "hiding in a hollow tree"; Amy was later seen talking with Terry about it on ABH. In my Principles of Illustration class, we were assigned to paint lyrics to a song.. I, of course, chose Evanescence.. ^^ The characters portrayed here are my original characters, Arisu and Hikaru..
[ . . .]
"(For)sake of Winter" 15''x15'', acrylic on illustration board
"Look for me in white forest, hiding in a hollow tree.. Come and find me?"
She cowers, tattered and chill.. The tears don't come.. They can't come.. All that she had given, all that she had done.. I-it.. really didn't matter in the end.. How foolish could she be.. so naive..
"All I wanted to say was I love you and I'm not afraid..." Her last thoughts that meant anything at all.. Her eyes drain of emotion. Frozen.
"I miss the winter.. a world of fragile things. Say goodnight. Don't be afraid. Calling me, calling as you fade to black.."
A cold figure pauses amongst the cold trees. Hikaru exhales, silently hoping that her breath would lift the awful heaviness from her chest.. Feeling?..
Guilt?.. Anguish?.. Pain?.. Remorse?..
Not yet.. Just turn around.
...
"Sweet raptured light, it ends here tonight."
(Quoted excerpts from "My Last Breath" by Evanescence) SOURCEMy painting, "Forsake of Winter", made an appearance in Evanescence's DVD, "Anywhere But Home" (It's in the Behind the Scenes section and "On the Road" subsection, I believe..).. I was quite surprised, to say the least..! Everyone go buy it.. It was released just last week.. ^^
[ . . . ]
Though if you can't download it for whatever reason, here is a little transcript of the scene.. Terry (the new guitarist who replaced Ben) finds the print I gave Amy earlier.. And I believe that it looks like John (the lead guitarist) is in the background, from his reflection on the mirror..
Terry: What's this? Amy: This girl painted it for me. Isn't that cool? It looks real, doesn't it? Terry: She *painted* it? Amy: Mmhm, she said she used acrylic. Terry: Wow. Amy: I can do that. Looks like pencil and acrylic. It's good. Terry: It's great. That's f*ckin' nuts. Amy: It's awesome! She said it was based on "My Last Breath". I don't know what that means. Maybe her interpretation or whatever. Terry: Hm. sh*t, she bought that at Wal-Mart. Amy: No she didn't, oh no she didn't give me her name. sh*t. I'll have to credit it and put it on the website. I'll send [Richie]. (I assume the name of her bodyguard). Terry: [Is it on] the corner? Amy: Maybe she'll still be there.
^^; Awh.. It was Micron pen and acrylic, dear Amy.. Though, I'm not sure why she didn't quite get the "My Last Breath" reference.. I thought it was fairly straightforward.. The rest of the song is applicable emotionally as well.. What do you think?
I miss the winter, a world of fragile things Look for me in the white forest hiding in a hollow tree Come and find me
And ::smacks Terry:: I did not buy it at Wal-Mart. :-p
Anyway as the story goes, Amy's poor bodyguard was then sent out to the line outside Roseland Ballroom (February 27th, 2004 concert) to search the several thousand-person line for me.. Luckily for him, I was near the front.. ^_^; I just attempted to find where I might have posted about that, but it seems that I neglected to.. Oops.
They still haven't posted it on the website.. :-p
Did I fangirlishly freak out and scream for the entire 42 seconds?
Why, yes. Yes, I did. Sorry, phoenyxraine's housemates. SOURCEWATCH from 13:19 - 14:01-On the Mystary EP, this track has NO bleeps or glitches. -This song was inspired by the tragic events of 9/11; presumably this demo would be an earlier demo of the 2001 - 2002 sessions (late 2001). Quote taken from Playing Evanescence Interview 2003: [Ben talks, (Amy talks)]: "My-my Last Breath came from right after the September 11th thing (right) and sort of from the perspective of someone who was just immediately swept away and-and-and and sort of a lingering emotion or lingering spirit, like saying goodbye because it was just, it was so sudden and so like (yeah saying goodbye and like, you know, spirit form, like coming to, um coming to the living loved one) and I just thought it was really cool - like, when it just hit me the holding my last breath, like that one moment it's like before you exhale - you know that last breath to like, you know (it's a really interesting position to put yourself in, mentally you know? It's like when you know that is the, the very end of it right there and it's like, this is like your like last two seconds) yeah and what do you do with them (yeah). And um, and this particular person in the story is sort of uh speaking to a loved one, you know, trying to comfort them you know like (just saying goodbye). And there is also like any kind of experiance there are mixed emotions, where when you go to the bridge is sort of the, the like denial factor or the anger factor that goes in for that brief moment, because no emotion is perfect by itself. It's like any experiance you go through, you're going to have a whole swirl." -Before this, people thought that this song was refering to someone committing suicide (speaking to someone who is dying/is dead) and the symbolism ("hiding in a hollow tree") coming from Dante's The Divine Comedy: (Quote - thanks to nyohah from the Fields of Innocence forums) "My Last Breath" is about exactly what the title suggests: Amy is trying desperately to communicate with a loved one during the last moments of her life. It is a painful song to hear, as Amy can't speak but is convinced she can be heard because she can taste it in their tears. Amy continues to attempt to comfort who she is leaving behind until they fade to black, representing finally letting out that final breath she had been safely holding inside her. But I found the thing about trees. They were referring to The Wood of the Suicides that is in the Seventh Circle of Hell and described in Canto XIII of The Inferno. From the summary at the beginning of the Canto in my copy, written by the translator, John Ciardi:
"Nessus carries the Poets across the river of boiling blood and leaves them in the Second Round of the Seventh Circle, THE WOOD OF THE SUICIDES. Here are punished those who destroyed their own lives and those who destroyed their substance.
The souls of the Suicides are encased in thorny trees whose leaves are eaten by the odious HARPIES, the overseers of these damned. When the Harpies feed upon them, damaging their leaves and limbs, the wound bleeds. Only as long as the blood flows are the souls of the trees able to speak. Thus, they who destroyed their own bodies are denied a human form; and just as the supreme expression of their lives was self-destruction, so they are permitted to speak only through that which tears and destroys them. Only through their own blood do they find voice. And to add one more dimension to the symbolism, it is the Harpies--defilers of all they touch--who give them their eternally recurring wounds." -Presumably, the 2001 - 2002 demo for My Last Breath was NOT one of the first ones released to the EvCommunity, as it is unusually absent from the Not For Your Ears bootleg (one of the first sources for the demos for the EvCommunity). It seems like this demo was released with the second wave of demos (Imaginary v2 et al). -Josh Freese played drums on this song; Francesco DiCosmo played bass. -During the Fallen tour, this song was usually after "Everybody's Fool," but before "Farther Away." -David says, along with "Going Under" and "Imaginary," that this song was one of his favorites to write: What was your favourite Evanescence song to write?
i love "going under" and "my last breath". even though it was partially already written before i joined, "imaginary" is my favorite. SOURCE-A "funny" song meaning as posted by Ben Moody: My Last Breath: Once Amy started some sh*t and Ben wasn't having it so he wrestled her to the ground and sat on her chest. She couldn't breathe -According to Music Notes: (1) My Last Breath is written in A Major. (2) It is set in a time signature of common time and performed in a tempo of 86 beats per minute. (3) Amy Lee's vocals range from E#3 to the note of D5. SOURCETHANKS to DoubleA for the lyrics and the videos are from FallenEvArmy and eminem0213!

I posted this on EvBoard a while ago and thought I'd share it here too. It's a short story I sort of wrote when I was youner tudring the Fallen-to-TOD hiatus. Hope you like it. It's a bout two lover that were in the 9/11 disaster, and it incorparates the lyrics of the song. It's a bit silly, I was young, but it's also kind of emotional, makes me wanna cry sometimes.

Such a sweet song... <3 One of my Fallen favourites! I love the way it starts, with that electronic part. Amy's vocals throughout the entire song are ever so gentle and emotional, and the string parts have added a lot to the song, too. I also love the immensely beautiful lyrics that come along. They paint that sad, yet pretty picture of a last good-bye, of having to leave someone forever. I also love the way the track ends, with those fading back vocals... PS: Still not getting that wintery feeling which MLB is supposed to give away judging by its lyrics. I wouldn't have guessed that song was inspired by the events of 9/11, either.

MOST OF THE TIME, this is my favorite Fallen song, and it's the only one I listen to because it's the only one whose drum parts aren't boring... sort of... So, you wanna tell me you diss all the rest of Fallen? xD As much as it's true that the album has that plain, at times boring, utterly commercial and simplified sound, it still is a good record with insanely catchy tunes on nevertheless. Oh, and should I also add that most of the songs on Fallen actually have a meaning, a story behind them?

What I got from his sentence was that he only liked the drums on MLB since the rest of the songs on Fallen (apparently) have boring drum parts. Fair enough, but then again, Ev's music definitely isn't about its drum parts only.

Fair enough, but then again, Ev's music definitely isn't about its drum parts only. You are wrong, I'll explain myself. I honestly had read your first reply a while ago but hadn't had enough time to respond in form. What I meant is that I can no longer listen to Fallen because the drum parts bore me now that I've listened to all those songs with BETTER drumm parts, I kinda feel like I can never go back (tehehehe). If I ever feel in the mood to listen to any Fallen sogn I go the best live recording that features Troy, Will (Hunt), Terry and Tim. Now, for one, I ain't dissin' no thang. I don't do that. I bash them. I mean, I discuss my likes and dislikes. Truth is I don't like Fallen and I find it personally pretty dull, musically. And we are all entitled to our opinions. Catchy does NOT mean good. Still I love all of the songs on Fallen (except for Tourniquet, I wish I could erase that from my mind), they mean a lot to me because I've been screaming on the inside listening to this band ever since 2003, which is almost ten years now, and I'm only getting older. Over the years I kinda outgrew Fallen. Many of its songs require that you are in a specific thinking channel to get into and musically most of them are pretty much hollow, aminly in the verses, a thign that has always bugged me, with a few exceptions. Lyrically, it has romantic, poetic feel to it, but it's overshadowed by its lack of maturity and the insistent clinging to unimaginative structures. I honestly can't relate to it, even when I'm going through some stuff the album wanders about becaue of the way it is expressed turns me off. Yet some of the songs were kind of jewels and have reached their true potential after being played with (in my opinion better, but this, of course, it's only subjective) musicians that are more involved in doing things right. I think it was Joshe Freese who did the drums right? Well, he's awesome and really talented and has a good technique, just like Rocky, but when a drummer is not involved in the writing of a song, IT SHOWS. One can't expect them to give their all if they are limited by an alread completed recording and feel no emotional attachment to the music whatsoever because it's not truly theirs. That was in my opinion the big mistake of both Fallen and The Open Door, and in the case of Rocky you could add the different influences ans stylistc preferences he had when compared to the direction Evanescence was taking. His drumming, not being necessarily bad, did not suit the bands music after TOD. My Last Breath, nevertheless, remains a favorite of mine because it's lyrical content is not full of teenage angst, but has a more romantic, realistic take on a tragedy ridden love and it's more opened to interpretation and is also much easier to connect to becaise it does not depend on certain things that may not be accesible to everyone (like a violent or unhealthly relationship, most us who have been there kinda want to move on from thatand not dwell on it). We all love. We all die. Therefore, I can understand this song froma lyrical point of view, just like, let's say, Imaginary. Musically, however is not much better than any other Fallen song, but hints a bit towards the future of the band, although the composer of it did not write anything, entierh in TOD or Ev3. The guitar riff could even fit Ev3 and it's cool, I give Moody an A+ on that one. I love more how they played the song in last year's January though. So what I'm tryong to say is that I love the songs on Fallen but I hate Fallen for the way it portrays them. tehy are so much more than what that album amkes them sound like, and to be honest, being famous because of that album has only hurt the band and given them what I see as a bad reputation. I love the content but not the product as a whole, and in my opinion Fallen does have boring drum parts, because even with the right technique they have no heart. Tehcnically, ALL songs ever have a story behind them some of them are bad (Oppa Gangnam Style?) and some of them are good (most of Ev's repertoire). And I only listen to MLB's Fallen recording the most out of the entire record because the good parts overshadow the bad ones hehehe.

Yay, I agree with you! Fallen IS dull! Hehehehehe.... And My Last Breath DOES have the best drums on it! But only the ending.... The rest is just standard Fallen bad. The verses of MLB in particular are horrendous... There are no instruments being played. I'm so tired of being nice about Fallen at this point, haha...
Here's the quick list of things you said that I love: -Catchy, not good -Outgrew Fallen -Hollow -Especially the verses -Lack of maturity -Unimaginative structures (10 out of twelve songs might as well be one really long, boring song) -Bad drums, yo -Imaginary not much better than rest of Fallen. (I find it extremely overrated... Of course, I find ALL of Fallen overrated) -BEING FAMOUS FOR FALLEN HAS HURT THE BAND. This is my favorite. Ev is never going to live down Fallen. People STILL criticized Ev3 (that we all know is a massive instrumental improvement over previous albums) for problems they had with Fallen that aren't present on Ev3. They don't even listen to the album before criticizing the band for Fallen's shortcomings (and TOD's)... -Stop before I make love to you.
I'm done now.... I just LOVE talking smack about Fallen, hehehehehehehehe.....
