Evanescence, Track #16 (Deluxe edition bonus track)
Turn out the lights Feed the fire 'Til my soul breathes free My heart is high As the waves above me
Don't need to understand Too lost to lose Don't fight my tears 'Cause they feel so good
And I, I will remember how to fly Unlock the heavens in my mind Follow my love back Through the same secret door
Look past the end It's a dream As it's always been All life lives on If we've ever loved it
And I, I will remember how to fly Unlock the heavens in my mind Follow my love back Through the same secret door
I, I will remember how to fly Unlock the heavens in my mind Follow my love back Through the same secret door

I think the music of this song, but I dislike how monotonous Amy's vocals are...

I took me almost a year to appreciate this song. I still don't love it like I do SH but I definitely listen to it more than when I first got the album. Sometimes I would pretend it didn't exist and just leave it off the album playlist.

I have the same opinion on this song as MHIB, although I like it more than MHIB. Before I found out what the song was about, I couldn't relate to it at all but finding that it's about a recurring dream I do find it relatable now (considering I'm always having some weird a** recurring dreams
I also think that the strings are beautiful, it would definitely be interesting to see what Amy can pull off if she was granted to score a film.

I'm glad the hype has died down on this song... I believe I remember people going mad with hype when we first heard the bonus songs... And sooo much Swimming Home bashing when really SH and SD are not only the two most unique songs on the album, but also more different from each other than any two songs on the album. That said, I love SD almost as much as I love SH. I love the lyrics, particularly "My heart is high as the waves above me" (great imagery) and "follow my love back through the same secret door"... I think at one point I did a more in depth analysis of the lyrics on old evthreads (ET just means Erase This to me, hehehe) about just why I love the lyrics so much but... Eh. Don't feel like doing it again. The only thing that stops me from loving this song more is the overly simplistic harp part. Just because she hasn't been playing it for very long doesn't mean she can't write something other than fifths. The chord progression itself is lovely, I just wish a little more thought went into I don't know.... A melody, perhaps? The vocals/strings/piano accomplish that, I know, but for the main harp song of the album I hoped for a little bit more... Didn't she add little flourishes here and there in the acoustic performance of it? Or am I making that up? I wish those were in the recording. I adore the ending though, those last few cascading notes of harp are lovely.

Well, Secret Door. This was my favorite song off the bonus CD when i first listened to it, because it sounded beautiful and it was the only song that sounded truly different from the rest (along with SH, that one's different, too and that alone makes me love it).
I really like the lyrics, they're very abstract and while Amy used words like "heart", "dream", "breathes" like she does in A LOT of tracks, this time it adds to the general feeling of the song. I think it's one of the best lyrics in EV3. The harp is simple, but sounds beautiful, Amy's voice sounds gorgeous and also the strings. However, this is not the sort of song i would listen to all the time or several times in a row. I need to be in a certain mood.
I have only one complaint, i'd like the chorus to sound a bit less loud in general, i don't like very much how they did it, that's why i usually prefer the acoustic version.

I like how the vocals are in the album version, but damn she sounded beautiful in the acoustic performance. So soft and delicate and fluffy....

I like Secret Door, how it's distinct and unique from the rest of the songs. I'm a total fan of all the hardcore loud stuff, but the peaceful, the calm, is also beautiful and relaxing.

I love everything about this song but for some reason I don't listen to it very often, something about doesn't keep me coming back for more

If my favourite lyrics on TOD were full of desperation and loneliness (Your Star, Like You, ATILF etc.), I think on Ev3 Amy's writing skills are most present on this track. Secret Door and Swimming Home probably have the best lyrics on the new record, IMO. On the contrary to TOD, this time she has succeeded best in writing songs with a positive undertone. This is an absolutely beautiful love song. I wish she didn't write angsty lyrics anymore, now when everything is fine in her life, and she has finally beaten the pain. I'd really love to hear more of that tender, mysterious, "dream world" lyric from her.

I'd really love to hear more of that tender, mysterious, "dream world" lyric from her. We don't know that everything is fine in her life. Yes, she is happy but that doesn't mean she has to write happy lyrics all the time. Things happen in people's lives that get them down and aren't always positive.

Among my absolute favorite Evanescence songs, if not my favorite. "Secret Door" is up there amongst my favorite songs of all time too. I love the haunting melancholy of the tune, the harp, strings, and the soft vocals. Classic Evanescence. If only Ev3 the album had more songs of this nature. I agree that the lyrics can be abstract but the way they're written and sung, as soon as I heard it I made a connection with this song to the haunting image in my mind's eye of the Titanic on the ocean floor. I've adored SD for this reason too. That's why I made the tribute video for the 100th year anniversary of the sinking using this song. The acoustic version is indeed equally as spellbinding.
But I agree that despite SD being a favorite if not the favorite of mine, I need to be in a certain mood and creative space in my mind to listen to it. Generally at night when I'm calm and insightful. It's not a song that's about just listening but it really involves imagination and thought too, so I don't just idly listen to SD. It's too emotional for that in my opinion, like "Together Again" is as well. I didn't find SD to be a standout unique track like SH was. SD to me is classic operatic Evanescence to me, whereas SH was the different song, with chillout electronica influences which reminded me of Christina Aguilera's "Bionic" album in taking risks with that genre.
I was the one in the Spotify chat who asked Amy about the meaning of Secret Door! She actually responded to my question which thrilled me. I was FLOORED when I read her replying to me, it's the only "contact" or acknowledgement I've had from her and was SO delighted it involved her answering my question about one of my favorite songs!
