Now that I'm done thinking about spankings, I should leave a nice comment on Cloud Nine. It was one of the songs that I couldn't get into at first, but that changed pretty quickly. Amy's vocals in the verses and bridges are fantastic, and the chorus is one of the super-long-notes choruses that I enjoy. It's tons better than the chorus in WotW. I love that the lyrics in the verses are so sassy, and even when they switch tone in the choruses, they're still kind of punchy, and it really works with the style of the song. I love the guitar in the bridges, especially how it kind of dances with the strings in the second one. And have I mentioned those backing vocals? This is one of my favourite songs for backing vocals. They're positively luscious in the intro, verses, choruses, middle-eight... They give an exotic feel to the song; a lovely, almost Middle Eastern flavour, and that's one of the things that really set this song apart. Yes..yes..and yes

I think that vaguely eastern-y, exotic sound is one of the general attributes of the album as well. On WOTW especially, LY, SS, and CN to a lesser extent, then Your Star really brings the 'exotic' sound, though I always get more of a Spanish kind of vibe from YS.
Another nice thing about Cloud Nine: Like many Ev songs, the guitar in the chorus is generally very simple chords, but in CN I find them to be more effective than most songs. The subtle changes in the guitar part of the chorus are really pretty and I've always liked it.

If I have to watch Boobyboy whooping your asses, I hope for my sake you have nice butts. Wait. How am I going to watch my own ass being whooped? I've added those disclaimers to 3/4 of my posts! Ah well, I can rest assured because I have a nice butt. Moving on... Cloud Nine was one of the first songs that stood out on TOD for me, because those wails were unlike anything else on the album. There was a point where the only part I would play, over and over again, was 'beg my broken heart to beat', because I never tired of it. In fact, to this day it's the only Evanescence lyrics my brother has memorized (Yep, he don't even know Wake Me Outside. The nerve!) Everything else has pretty much already been elaborated in this thread.

So Cloud Nine was one of the first Ev songs I heard, and I fell in love immediately. Amy's vocals and the background vocals sound so cool really as if it's taking you to Cloud Nine. It is still in my top 3 songs from TOD, and I really love the lines 'In a dream, will you give your love to me? Beg my broken heart to beat' and 'Remember that all alone is where I belong'.

I didn't remember until looking back at some old posts on Evboard that "Cloud Nine" was actually one of my favorites off TOD when it came out. It was my 3rd favorite after "Like You" and "Lose Control", and I even said I was very certain it would remain in that spot. It's so weird how far it moved down on my TOD list! It's not that I stopped liking it, I guess it's just that I started liking other songs more. But after listening to it over and over the past few days, I think it definitely deserves to move back up the list!
This song just immediately grabs your attention right off the bat with Amy's spooky wailing. The verses are actually one of my favorites on this album. The electronic elements and beats, Amy's aggressive vocals, the lyrics, the vocal effect, the sexy grinding bass...the verses are just kick ass. I also love that dark and doomy sounding guitar riff right before the first pre-chorus part. And how everything goes quiet at the start of the second verse, with just Amy's voice and the haunting strings.
The lyrics in the verses are actually kind of simple, but I've always adored them. It probably has a lot to do with her delivery, especially in the first verse. The way she sings "hiiiigh" is just genius. And the line "I'm not afraid to dream, to sleep, sleep forever" is one of my absolute favorite lines from Ev.
The pre-chorus parts are AMAZING. Her vocal acrobatics, those guitars, the backing vocals, the strings. Perfection!
The chorus isn't as strong to me, but it's still beautiful and powerful. It has some of my favorite backing vocals from Amy in a chorus. I also love how they expand the chorus later in the song. I always felt like it really helped add variety to the song and album as a whole. It keeps it from seeming like just the typical verse-chorus-verse-chorus song structure.
And the transition into the bridge is brilliant. How everything winds down to just the tinkering piano and Amy's delicate vocals. But then pow! It kicks right back up and becomes surprisingly epic.
I think this is a song that really demonstrates Ev's creative abilities. Listening to it so much lately has just made me really miss this kind of crazy creativity from them! I need them to go back to this kind of awesomeness!

Week four of Song of the Week brings us.....
*drumroll*
Breathe No More!
Featuring the ABH performance, which I consider to be the best version of the song.

I used to think the Fallen outtake version of Breathe No More is boring, but I love it now. I still prefer the demo though, especially whatever those sounds are in the outro.
I don't contribute much to this thread.

But I know the difference, Between myself and my reflection. I just can't help but to wonder, Which of us do you love. Do I need to say anymore? Those lines made me have one of the first "connections" I guess you could say to a song before

One of my favorites I think the outtake from Fallen is the best (although I do have a remix of the live version on my iPod). I think the calmness and the emotion in this really makes it stand out, making it probably one of my favorites. Amy writes the best sad songs

I've always loved the lyrics to this song It's a very pretty song; my favorite versions are the outtake and ABH's live version.

I'm going to re-title this the Premature Ev-jaculation thread. We must first soak up the juices of the song for a couple days before spewing them all over the thread! ... Otherwise this thread will just be dead for four days of the week, heh.
My first nice thing of many about Breathe No More: I owe this song basically my entire life right now. I know that's dramatic, but it is through this song that I discovered the one thing in life I am more passionate about than anything else... And that was completely an accident. This was my first favorite Evanescence song. I had already heard BMTL and I liked it, but my first Ev cd was Anywhere But Home and I was obsessed with BNM. My mom got me some cheap midi keyboard one Christmas because I desperately wanted to learn to play this song. So, I got my keyboard, but actually learned Hello first because it was easier. BNM was second, but is still the only reason I ever taught myself to play piano. Now I'm making music every single day and constantly working toward a life goal that started as nothing more than wanting to learn Breathe No More. It's one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard and by far the most humble song they've ever released. It's Evanescence's little secret and I love it.

^ That is a really awesome story. That's so cool that this song ended up having such a big impact on your life.
"Breathe No More" is one of my absolute favorite Ev songs ever. Well, the demo version, that is. I could never really get into the official version because I find it a bit too plain and boring. So I'll be referring to the demo in this post.
I adore everything about the music. The addition of instruments and electronics make this song more than just a typical piano ballad. It makes it really unique and stand out. The beat is so cool and works perfectly. All the little electronic elements give it such beautiful atmosphere. I also love the bit of static-y guitar in the second verse. It's something you wouldn't think to put in a song like this, but it just works. One of my favorite elements of the song is the bass. It gives the song this totally unexpected, chill groove, and it intertwines with the beat so beautifully. I just realized while listening to the song for this, that the bass really gives me a Bjork vibe. "Joga" specifically is coming to mind. I love that after listening to this song god knows how many times for all these years, that I've still come to realize something new about it. Just another reason why I'm loving this Song Of The Week thing!
The lyrics are lovely and emotional. I used to relate to this song so much when I was younger. Probably more than any other Ev song. I think that's a big part of why it's remained one of my favorites over the years - the nostalgic aspect of it. Listening to this song often kind of transports me back to that time in my life - a bit melancholy and lonely, but strangely content. I usually see a rainy day, either on long car rides to Texas or just gazing out my bedroom window. I guess I used to love listening to this song when it rained. But they're really nice memories. I should listen to this song next time it rains and create some more.
I'll also add that I think the live rendition of this song is great too. Really lovely. Especially the ABH version. I love John's acoustic guitar work and Terry's atmospheric guitar.

Breathe No More is my favourite Ev ballad. I learnt to play 2 Ev songs on piano and this was one of them. It was pretty satisfying as I got better at playing it. Amy sounds so desperate, the piano is beautiful, and it has the best Ev lyrics of all the ballads I think. It's a shame that all 3 of the Fallen B-sides were left out really.
