I've seen this before. It's basic and the writer isn't very familiar with Amy's voice (they only have a general idea based on a few songs and I doubt they saw her live performances over the years). But thanks anyway.

Thanks guys, but that's not what I'm looking for. It's pretty awesome to know she reached to A#7 though! I wonder in which interview was that?

strychnin: Amy's vocal technique is apparently SLS style. I'll try to find a link to this as it was over at the old EvThreads.
Guys, I've merged "Has Amy ever had any formal vocal training?", "Amy's Vocal Technique" and "Amy's Vocal Profile" threads together. I have changed the "Has Amy ever had any formal vocal training?" Title to "Amy's Vocals: A discussion about technique, style & training". I think having two threads about Amy's vocals is just clutter. In the past, we were unable to have a thread about Amy's vocals. I do not want this thread to turn into an all out debate/war/argument/drama over Amy's vocals. We all have our opinions as we're all human and are very different. There is no need to bash anyone because they have a differing opinion from your own. If any drama starts out over Amy's vocals, the posts will be deleted and/or the thread will be closed.

Amy always mixed lyric technique with popular singing. I love voice her in the past. I really think she today, sing with the technique many bad live actually, forced timbre in low notes and high notes spending much energy. This tour i really dont like of voice her and i waited better changes and i think the voice her sounded outworn. She sound much open, always forcing ressonance, the throat in head voice and dont sound natural and confortable in live because dont study modern technique correctly. I prefer the voice her in Fallen Era or Thhe Open Door tour. Sorry my english.

I've read in the comments of Speak To Me that Amy does a lot of scooping and that she relies too much on it to create emotions. What do you think? I know it's not encouraged by professionals, but I feel like it's her trademark. And anyway, if everyone is singing the same way it's boring. Do you think it's annoying when you hear it? Here's a video about scooping: www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNW3c1wX4DoI don't know if what she says is 100% legit but seems good enough to me

Here's a video about scooping: www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNW3c1wX4DoI don't know if what she says is 100% legit but seems good enough to me I'm no vocal expert, but I'd definitely agree she 'scoops' a lot. Personally, I find this the easiest way to belt out a note (particularly since I have a lower vocal range than most so I find it's the only way I can sing along to pop songs in the car ). As for whether or not it's a good thing. I think as long as she's not destroying her voice in the process then it really doesn't matter if certain notes are off key or whether she's singing in an unconventional way. If it sounds good, then it sounds good. I'm fairly sure that if you listen to some vocal elitists, even her little "speak to me" whisper at the end is taboo or not "executed correctly", and for me that's the most powerful and evocative part of the song. If everyone had identical vocal training and perfect technique, you'd end up with every vocalist sounding like a very average Xfactor or American Idol contestant.

I think Amy changed her singing technique and tries to sound more professional after the Fallen era it's why her voice and pitch sounds noticeably deeper in The Open Door and after from Fallen. I love her voice no matter what but it hurts me when I see her struggle and strain her voice when singing live..

I love her voice no matter what but it hurts me when I see her struggle and strain her voice when singing live.. I think Amy's technique (esp. when singing live) has actually improved. She mixes more head voice into her belt now when she used to really drag her chest voice up to belt. The reason her voice sounds "deeper" (I think you mean "darker") is probably because her voice is maturing. (The voice doesn't stop changing at puberty.) Pitch really has nothing to do with technique. A pitch is just a musical note, although I think you are referring to the color of her voice (which is called "timbre"). I believe a major reason why Amy struggles live a bit is because she's running around and not breathing properly, although it's gotten better in her recent live performances. The last time I saw her in Dallas, she killed it. Also, Amy's vocal writing is a BITCH to sing. It's an even bigger bitch to do it when you have to do it 17x in a row.

hm. my last post might've implied that I thouhght Amy's technique has become "forced" but that's not what I meant to say so I though I'd correct it because Amy's technique has damn improved, by far. and I think she has more control of her voice now that she did in the past. she "screws up" singing live from time to time which is fine because she often does a fantastic job and guess she prefers to have fun and enjoy herself on stage than just being a singing figure and it's completely her choice really, hope that won't damage her voice somehow in the long run though. I'm not a voice/singing guru so I wouldn't know. she seems to handle this better lately I guess because EV's last live performance from November 2016 is one of my favorites.

Not really a reply to your comment, but you seem pretty knowledgeable about singing/vocal technique so I wanted to ask if you had a few favorite live vocal performances by Amy? Mine is definitely "The Session" of Lost In Paradise with just Amy and a piano in the big empty room.

Mine is definitely "The Session" of Lost In Paradise with just Amy and a piano in the big empty room. I think Amy does her best whenever she is performing acoustic sets (sans the harp, cause the harp makes her nervous). Let me dig up a few videos. Also, I just got my MM in vocal performance last summer, and I had to take all these vocal pedagogy classes, which is why I know a bit. From the top of my head, the 2006 AOL Sessions are one of her best vocal performances.
