I like this album and the songs but it's not my fave album, TOD still is
I love all the songs on ev3 but some get boring after a while, the only ones keeping me going at the moment are LIP, Oceans, Sick, NGB, and SH...the rest I have to be in the mood for, I am thankful for the album I just have to be in the mood for most songs

After listening to the album more lately, I think I realize the main things "missing."
First, Amy's vocals. She sings in essentially the same tone the ENTIRE album. Except for Swimming Home and the a few of the bonus tracks. I think that's why Swimming Home is such a relief. I can appreciate that with "The Open Door" she sang in several different tones throughout the album. No song sounds alike.
Also, I think the mixing was bad. There's no stand-out guitar moments. All the music just blends together.
And while I still enjoy the album, I think that's where the overall problem lies.

Funny thing is I'm still in the "honeymoon stage" with this album. I was the exact same way with TOD.

Feel free to chat about the self-titled album 'Evanescence' in general. For individual songs, please use the topics provided. One of the things that surprised me about this album was the placing of WYW. As you know, with previous albums, the lead singles were the 2nd track. I was actually a little saddened by that, because when I listen to an album for the first time, I look forward to hearing how they choose to open the album. Although I already knew the track-listing, when I put the album in and WYW came on, I couldn't help but think "Meh, I've already listened to this about 50,000 times - onto the next one" and it spoiled that 'special moment' for me. And did anyone else get the feeling that 'Erase This' and 'Lost In Paradise' should have been the other way around? Every time I finished listening to LiP, I kept expecting ET this to start up, only to hear Sick instead. But I'm used to it now because I've heard the album so many times. And for those of you that own the deluxe edition, have you noticed the extended silence between Swimming Home and New Way To Bleed. It may seem stupid but it's like they made a point to separate those tracks from the rest and I don't like it. yeah, the silence between the regular songs and deluxe songs bother me, especially when i want to listen to the whole album. the silence throws me off

I already wrote a song by song review at the old ET, but I was already planning writing another one since some scores/opinions have changed so here it is. (First scores date from December 2011) 1. What You Want: 5/10 -> 6/10: really love the bass line and guitars. Love the bridge as well. Still too cheesy for Ev though. 2. Made Of Stone: 10/10 -> 8/10: three cheers for the bridge and the guitar solo, love Amy’s seductive voice, but the song gets repetitive at the end. 3. The Change: 10/10 -> 10/10 Plain awesome, must be the catchiest song Ev has ever written. 4. My Heart Is Broken: 8/10 -> 8/10 Great piano, soaring vocals, fluffy lyrics. 5. The Other Side: 6/10 -> 7/10: prefer it live. (excellent bridge, Amy + piano = heaven) 6. Erase This: 8/10 -> 6/10 Although I love the upbeat piano at the beginning I just think the song overall, is too loud, and the chorus is dragging too much. But the bridge is probably one of the most beautiful moments of the entire album. 7. Lost In Paradise: 9/10 -> 8/10: The lyrics don't seem consistent. But musically, a simple yet beautiful masterpiece. 'Cruel WANT-ing' gets me every single time. 8. Sick: 9/10 -> 8/10: Too short, there's something missing. Needs a solo or something. 9. End Of The Dream: 10/10 -> 10/10: I love it one of my fave of EV3, lyrically + vocal-wise. (She has tha lungs. The way she controls her voice! 10. Oceans: 9/10 -> 7/10: Too much yelling going on sadly, especially in the first verse and the chorus. Love the guitar-build up and bridge. The last violins are so random and a bit out of place imo. 11. Never Go Back: 12/10 -> 12/10 Best song of EV3 I think. Great lyrics, heartbreaking vocals, great guitars, heavy. PERFECT. 12. Swimming Home: 9/10 -> 10/10 Lovely, it's as simple as that. 13. New Way To Bleed: 10/10 -> 8/10: Was an instant lover, but got a bit tired of it. 14. Say You Will: 4/10 -> 8/10: verses grew on me a lot, still not that fond of the chorus. 15. Disappear: 8/10 -> 6/10: too loud for my taste, acoustic version please! 16. Secret Door: 9/10 -> 8/10: Also lovely, but the fact that Amy starts belting in such a peaceful song is a bummer. => TOP 3: 1) NGB 2) EOTD 3) TC Overall conclusion: Very enjoyable album but not their best. I love the band vibe. You see that every member had their input. Just a pity that Troy joined in later, cause he'd definitely had brought in some more solos. Something this album greatly lacks. A pianosolo, or other instrumental parts are welcome as well. I also had the feeling they ‘rushed’, not only in the production process (not always good mixing, loud sometimes seemed to be more valued than quality) but also lyric-wise: there are a lot of words that keep returning.. Broken, oceans, heart… Finally it definitely needs some quiet moments: Amy’s voice is at its best now, but goddd, they could’ve done sooooo much more with it than just the all time belting. More use of lower register, more insane high notes cause we all know she can do that, hold her mouth now and then more layers... I didn't really miss the choir, but it'd be nice to have them back next album.

I'm copying you, *tight rope*. But I don't have past ratings..... What You Want: 6/10 - Too cluttered, but overall it is sonically interesting throughout and fun to listen to occasionally. Made of Stone: 4/10 - I love the use of vibes, but I'm waiting for Ev to stop decorating their songs with new sounds and start really putting them to good use. The verses are the most interesting part... The chorus is nice, the middle eight is nice, but the piano part is absolutely unforgivable. Amy half assed it. Someone who has been playing piano as long as she has should be so above that. Once again, they're just decorating a song instead of really writing something of substance. The Change: 7/10 - On the album it's the verses that really shine. They're beautiful, serene, and the synths are really well used. It's also nice to hear a different guitar style than the rest of the album. The song loses a lot of points with me for being completely derivative of Ev's older work though. Shades of Like You, Lithium, Lose Control, etc... It's not a creative song by any means and the chorus is flat in the recording. Live it is stunning (the aaaaah's) half the time, but painful to listen to the other half (can you hear MEAERAEHAESFB-dead). The "how could I" section is flimsy at best, but not bad. My Heart is Broken: 6/10 - This song is a lyrical flop. The phrase "dark angel" should have been retired from use after they made that awful tv show... I applaud the straightforwardness of "my heart is broken", but the disconnection between the lyrics and Amy's supposed inspiration is grating. It comes across as an afterthought applied to shallow lyrics to give them more meaning than they actually have. The interplay of drums and piano is really nice throughout the song and the strings are gorgeous. Vocally, this is the most obnoxious song of the album. Erase This and Never Go Back ten times as tender when compared to a song NAMED 'My Heart is Broken'. The Other Side: 6/10 - Them drums! I'd rate this song higher for the drums if they weren't totally outshined by Sick and Erase This, because the drums really are the best thing about this song. The vocal melody is unoriginal, so I ignore it. The chorus is good, but not the most ear catching thing. It's the ending that's really great. From the end of the second chorus to the end of the song it becomes really enjoyable. Erase This: 9/10 - Erase This is so distinctly Evanescence, but unlike any song they've released. It's special right from the start. This and My Heart is Broken are the only songs where Amy's overly simplistic piano parts work. Erase This scrapes by on each instrument fully depending on every other instrument. Take one out and it falls apart. This is one of the best things about the song, but also its biggest flaw. The chorus drops the piano, leaving us with a barren soundscape. This is nothing new for Evanescence who shamelessly abuse bland guitar chords, but it is disappointing in a song with so much energy and interplay between the instruments. It's still not the worst chorus of the album, though. Putting aside the thrilling drum and bass parts, it's the second half of the song that makes it a standout. From "the water's rising around us" to the end, the song becomes an event. This is the single most developed build up on the entire album, leading to one of the only true endings on the album. Most songs just cut off or fade out, not Erase This. Let's not forget the big strings moment... It's like a guitar solo, but instead it's piano and strings and the drums are still , even underneath the strings and piano, STILL keeping it interesting. A severely underrated song among songs that get more credit for doing much less. Lost in Paradise: 7/10 - I question whether this song is better acoustic or electric... On one hand it's fantastic to listen to the album version on full blast in the car... But in headphones or with lower volume the song is completely flat. Acoustically the song gives in to its raw origins. Foregoing the big production it is much more heartfelt, the vocals are ten times as clear and beautiful. I don't understand the decision to turn a unique moment on the album into everything else. All that said, it's still a great song. I don't approve of My Immortal comparisons in this case, as I think it is much more similar to Lithium. I can't wait for the day Ev piano songs are no longer compared to My Immortal. Lost in Paradise is better than that. Sick: 3/10 - All three points go to the awesome drumming in the song. It's totally uninspired, lyrically bland, and is missing so many things. Also, nothing pisses me off more than decorative piano in a band with a pianist. Fuck the beginning of the second verse of this song.. Seriously. It's more interesting than the entirety of the rest of it, but they don't develop the sound at all. Instead they go the typical, generic route. I guess those three points can be shared with the synth pads (which sound like mutant crickets, which is kind of awesome) and the intensity Amy puts into the word 'sick' in live performances. End of the Dream: 4/10 - I really hate using this word... But this song is filler. That's just the truth. It is still a good song, don't get me wrong, it's better than Sick. I love the verses, the attitude is brilliant, the chorus is impressive if you're a fan of loud "eeeeeeeeeee" sounds... It just feels incomplete.... And of course, that damn decorative piano again. Stop doing that Amy.... It makes me gag. You've been playing piano for as long as I've been alive... Show it. Oceans: 7/10 - I hated this song the first time I heard it. I actually really like it now... I like the big low synth pads and how ridiculously over the top the vocals are. I also like the instrumental underneath through the entire song. It's great. It's the chorus that drags it down for me... It is just so tiresome. It's just "blaaaah, blaaaaaaaah, blaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah everything that we believed in was blaaaaaaaah!" ... Still, it's a really great song. Love that guitar bit after the first chorus. Never Go Back: 9/10 - Hands down one of the best songs Evanescence has ever released. There isn't a moment of this song that I don't like... However, it is mixed AWFULLY. Worst mixing on the album. Crackling noises, sounds that should be resonant and dramatic just sound loud, flat, and muffled. Those poor strings. I do wish Amy would stop putting filler piano parts in there that just follow the vocal melody... But the Give Unto Me-esque piano section is not only fun to listen to, it's fun to play. Also, dat bass. Swimming Home: 9/10 - Such a relief, yo. This song is so welcome after listening to the first eleven. It's the single most unique song of all sixteen, and lyrically the most thoughtfully simple. The instrumentation is a little flimsy and the beat is too static for such a flowing, ethereal song.. But in the end it's a success. New Way to Bleed: 5/10 - This song has two distinct personalities: The unoriginal boring one, and the interesting moody one. Lyrically it's really fun, especially "If it makes you feel like a bigger man"... I love that line. It has a very dull chorus... The harp is what really saves this song from being completely boring. That moment is so eerily beautiful , vocals included. Say You Will: 6/10 - It's really different for Evanescence and the verses have friggin' awesome percussion... But the vocals are too cheesy. So, so cheesy... I blush when I listen to it. That said, the "I want to make you feel that way" part makes it worth it. So intense and honest... Such a shame it's followed by such a hideous piano build up. That part is just plain ugly. Disappear: 7/10 - This song is great... But I just wanna slap Amy on the back of the head for that piano part. It doesn't work... It's forced, it's lazy... Bleh. It works by itself, but not with what this song eventually became. I still love the song though until it is further ruined by an awful ending. "All alone, all alone" etc... This is another ugly moment. I can't think of another way to describe it... It's just ugly and unpleasant. I am so thankful for the new ending this song received during the tour... Too bad that's not on the album. Secret Door: 8/10 - This song is almost without flaw. The vocals are subject to some criticism, but I don't really think of them negatively. It feels like it needs a little bit more of something... I don't really know what.

how dare you? ^^LOL, Melt! I used to watch dark angel religiously, hahaha, it wasn't a good show and the acting wasn't good either, but Jessica Alba was there spreading all her hotness, so that was enough for me to watch it every single week. ;D Max looked like such a hot les, btw, too bad she was straight, bleh. Not much lez material for my little, hungry lesbionic mind at that time. It was all in my imagination, sadly. Although Original Cindy was a lez, but, you know, the show wasn't really about her, she was just Max's best friend. Anyway, dark angel rant over. Overall conclusion: Very enjoyable album but not their best. I love the band vibe. You see that every member had their input. OMG three points for Sick, why D: Is that directed at me? Heh... Because I weigh originality more than most things when analyzing music. If a song isn't very creative, then it has to be either ridiculously catchy, emotionally satisfying, or lyrically brilliant... Sick is none of those things. Sick is "nice". Sick makes a statement, that's what Sick is about... But it's a statement without a unique perspective... It's just words.

Me neither! Seriously time flies.. This day one year ago I remember rushing to the record store, buying ''evanescence'', going home, saying hi to my roommate and pointing out to NOT DISTURB me for like an hour, plugging in my earbuds...and then lost in paradise

I remember this day a year ago too, running to about 5 different stores(they only had standard version or shipment got screwed up) I was so tired and when I finally found it I yelled yes and everyone looked at me and I just smiled and walked away(yay Walmart)! It was also pouring rain out!
