I think Fallen has a deep emotional vibe the other albums don't. While they all are, definitely, emotional, Fallen is something different. I guess it has the mix of having a depressing youth as well as an expert ability with metaphors, poetry, and of course the musical talent. I think as the band members grew older the emotions and how they responded to them also became different, and because of this they wrote music that was different. Perhaps because I'm at the age Amy and Ben were when several of these songs were first written (though several were altered by the time they made it to Fallen), I'm able to relate to this album more than any other.

Does anyone know the inspiration, or story behind, why Whisper was written? Is there an interview about the Fallen songs like there was that VH1 interview about the songs for TOD?

Fallen is that timeless, ever-lasting Ev album. It's basically made them who they are. Despite all the band member changes, despite the altering of the sound, Fallen still is and always will be the main point of Evanescence; it's what made them big. I guess I have a rather different standpoint on it than most of you here, as I haven't fully experienced the whole euphoria around the release of that record. Back in the day it came out, I was around 9 or so. Although I could already appreciate the greatness of songs such as BMTL and MI, I didn't really get into Ev at first. It took me years, until the spring of 2006, in order to actually become the fangirl that I still am as of today. I then joined the Bulgarian Ev community, after finally having gotten hooked up on various tracks of the band. It was around that time when I also started discovering Ev's pre-Fallen material. Soon enough, I had fallen for the band's music completely! I couldn't wait for TOD to come out, and that's maybe where the difference came in for me; I couldn't get enough of Ev, I wanted more. I specifically wanted TOD. Then again, I was at the age of 12-13 which would make one think I'd have related more to Fallen. Trust me, I -could- relate to this record quite well, it just couldn't really leave the same impression on me as TOD did. Don't get me wrong; I love Fallen. It's just that it could have been written better. It could have been more diverse, less commercial, less simplistic. I have the feeling it lacks the maturity of the latter records in all ways possible. Now that I look back on Fallen, I can still get (nearly) the same feeling and experiences out of its songs, but at the same time, they also feel quite different to me. As if I've *outgrown them or something. I've started seeing the songs from a different perspective. I've matured myself and that is quite a pity but at least, it proves I've (partially) moved on. On the brighter side of things, Fallen is a nostalgic record. It represents that young, shy, innocent and insecure part of me. In a way, I have the feeling I've lost something from that period of my life. And that something could actually be found on Fallen. *outgrown = (in this case) not particularly grown out of them, just having started seeing them differently PS: Sadly, the abovementioned Bulgarian community doesn't exist any more... :/

PS: Sadly, the abovementioned Bulgarian community doesn't exist any more... :/ Well, this is exactly why I turned from a typical case of an ET lurker with about 50 lame posts for 5 years and absolutely no memory of my existence to the other extreme ;D I'll miss that community but I couldn't wish for more than I got from the current one (Plus, I downloaded the whole ev-bg gallery before the site went down for good <- do you recognize this?) Anyway, back on topic - you know an album is good when 10 years later it still evokes the same emotions as the first time you heard it. Fallen is still my favorite album and yes, some songs still make me tear up in certain situations. I don't think I will ever outgrow it.

Haha, that emoticon! ;D Gotta agree with you, though. I could never really connect to that old community and I was always being the left one out. This place has so much more to offer... Oh, and, did you mean Fallen is just your favourite Ev record or is it actually also your all-time fav album?

Well, I needed a second CD because the first one actually stopped working after having been played every single day for years so I guess it qualifies for all-time favorite I have a feeling I committed a crime against grammar here but you get what I mean - Fallen is awesome and always will be.

There's this quote on EvReference: "Whisper is something that we still play on stage a lot and I love playing it, it's a great live song. But lyrically it doesn't hold a ton of meaning for me anymore 'cause I'm not really at a very dark place in my life at all right now. I'm at a pretty positive place. So unless I'm really angry, I don't totally relate to Whisper."

Haha, it's okay. I see. I figured out I'd forgotten to mention a few other aspects of the album from my perspective: 1) It has that hit formula needed for a debut record. 2) Fallen has that very juvenile rebellious sound and lyrics which I miss on Ev's latest records. 3) I still prefer Hello to Like You, despite the latter one being part of my favourite EV record. 4) The tracklisting still confuses me up to date, with GU being first and BMTL coming second seeing as BMTL was The single from Fallen... I also usually skip the album version of MI. Couldn't really get used to it... 5) I LOVE the artwork for Fallen! It's just so damn beautiful! I still wonder as to what the actual idea/story behind it is but it hints on another dimension of some sort. I can in fact recall there used to be speculations about the album cover itself having been inspired by some anime character (if my memory serves me well.) I just cannot seem to recall her name... :/

^ Eh? Though, it seems more likely the character was based on the album cover than the other way around... Or it's just a coincidence.

Actually, as far as I'm concerned, that character was developed way before the release of Fallen. Correct me if I'm wrong.

As far as I'm concerned ( ) the show didn't air until 2006, I don't know when precisely the character was created (and I suspect you don't either), but the show wasn't made until long after Fallen was released.

I was quite into Ergo Proxy for a little while, and I remember reading an article/interview with the guy who designed Re-l's character (the chick in the picture above). I distinctly remember him saying that he really loved Amy Lee's look and designed Re-l to look like Amy. I've been searching for the article and I can't find it anymore, but I have a very real memory of reading this, so... yeah.
