I was reading some old magazine interviews from TOD era, and Amy claimed in an Italian interview that she got paid for writing GE for Narnia. Can you translate the whole thing? Much appreciated. 'Fallen' was a globally successful album. What has changed in Evanescence and in yourself in these three years?
Now I feel much more confident. When we recorded Fallen, I was afraid of making even the smallest mistake, I had no professional recording experience and never knew what to do. Now I live every situation much more calmly, even when it comes to shooting the videos that were the thing that terrified me the most until some time ago. I'm becoming a real actress... (laughs) By gaining confidence with these things, I've also come to have greater control over what concerns the group. Get the video of CMWYS. It's clearly not a song that lends itself to many interpretations. It's quite direct, both in the music and in the lyrics. To enrich it I thought of that idea of Little Red Riding Hood and the wolves, which gives the whole thing a very Gothic, almost perverse effect. How is 'The Open Door' different from 'Fallen'?
This album is much more polished than Fallen in terms of arrangements. The guitar parts are complex and there are different ones for each song. I think it's our best, from this point of view. But what expectations do you have for TOD? Do you think it can replicate what your previous record did?
Frankly, I don't know. However, it's not like if this album sells half of Fallen we're going to tear our hair out... We know that a record can be successful or not for a thousand reasons. What makes us happy is knowing that we have made an album that fully satisfies us, that we wanted to give something deep and bright to our fans. We believe we have succeeded. Death is a topic that comes up very often in your lyrics. Also in this new album there are several songs on which a gloomy atmosphere rests. It's your choice?
Yes, also because I'm the only author of the lyrics. I do not deny that I am fascinated by the idea of death. Not in the sense that I want to commit suicide, but certainly in trying to understand what comes after life. It's something I can't help but think about, perhaps because I happened to lose a sister when I was very young... since then, the thought of what life and death are has always accompanied me. Does the title The Open Door have any particular meaning?
The title is meant to represent an open door to the future, the realization that everything that happens to us depends on what we want to happen. When we started as a group, I confess that I was afraid of many things, I thought I wasn't adequate and the feeling I often experienced was that of having doors closed in front of me. This vision of a closed door, of not having the strength to open it, has accompanied me for many years and has always been present in my nightmares. Is it true that you wrote a song for the 'Chronicles of Narnia' soundtrack that wasn't included in the film?
"Even for me it was a surprise not to see it on the official CD of the film. By the way, they had already paid the rights... Well, I don't know what happened, but it's not a problem since that song is 'Good Enough' and we put it on The Open Door. A deal, right?
