Saw this thread pop up and it made me listen to the song again for the first time in ages. Still one of my favourites.
Even after all this time, I don't know how everybody hears 'did' at the end of 'Lie cold in the ground like you' in the final chorus. I hear her singing 'sis', and it would make sense to the rhyme for her to sing 'did', but it's definitely not there. I even slowed the speed of the song down on YouTube to double check.
I particularly love the backing vocals in the finale of the song, and the almost 'call and response' vibe of the strings in the second verse. So beautiful and dramatic.

This is the same video and I watched it with the speed reduced. I really honestly can't hear it. She comes off the 'you' quite percussively, but I don't hear 'did'.

I always hear "I long to be like you, sis, lie cold in the ground like you did", but I think part of that may be my brain wanting to hear it that way. I have reasons that I won't go into here that mean I relate closely with those particular words. Personally, I think it's good that different people hear different things in lyrics. I have a friend who completely misheard lyrics in Sweet Sacrifice, for instance, and her take on it was really cool and thought provoking. I actually felt bad putting her right.
I often wonder what it'd be like if we weren't given the lyrics (as will no-doubt be the case with Synthesis if they choose not to give it a physical release). Sometimes not giving people a definitive explanation adds to the mystique and allows people to apply the words to their own lives in a greater variety of ways. The worst thing you can often do in art is give away the reason behind it.

Personally, the "did" sounds clear to me. I just don't know why Amy/Terry put "did" there. It does rhyme with "sis", but isn't her sister still lying in the ground?

I've always thought it was "dear".

Maybe it's a reference to the funeral.

Maybe it's a reference to the funeral. I hear "did" and that's honestly how I've always thought of it. But that may just be because personally, I tend to think of people going into the ground at the funeral, but after that, they don't really feel like they're there anymore. *shrugs* I don't know why.

Didn't one of the band members respond to a question on either the old EvThreads or EvBoard confirming the lyrics were "sis" and "dear"? I feel like Amy said it on one of those platforms.
Edit: Or was it on EvClub?

Edit: Or was it on EvClub? I don't remember that. I know there was a debate over it was 'sis', and 'ter' (to complete the word). But I'm 99.9% sure it's 'did'.

I think EvBoard was the "did"/"ter" debate. I'm pretty sure it was the old EvThreads-- I feel like it was confirmed by the wife of a band member as "dear". And to be honest, dear makes a lot more sense in context than did.
