Lyrics:
Going Under - 2001-2002 DemoNow I will tell you what I've done for you
50 thousand tears I've cried
Screaming deceiving and bleeding for you
And you still won't hear me
(
Going under)
Don't want your hand this time I'll save myself
Maybe I'll wake up for once (
Wake up for once)
Not tormented daily defeated by you
Just when I thought I'd reached the bottom
I'm dying again
I'm going under (
Going under)
Drowning in you (
Drowning in you)
I'm falling forever (
Falling forever)
I've got to break through
I'm (
I'm) going under
Blurring and stirring the truth and the lies
(
So I don't know what's real) So I don't know what real and what's not (
What's real and what's not)
Always confusing the thoughts in my head (
Ahhh)
So I can't trust myself anymore
I'm dying again
I'm going under (
Going under)
Drowning in you (
Drowning in you)
I'm falling forever (
Falling forever)
I've got to break through I'm (
I'm)
So go on and scream
Scream at me I'm so far away (
So far away)
I won't be broken again (
Again)
I've got to breathe I can't keep going under
2:36-2:42
I'm going under (
Going under)
Drowning in you (
Drowning in you)
I'm falling forever (
Falling forever)
I've got to break through I’m (
I'm)
I'm going under (
Going under)
Drowning in you (
Drowning in you)
I'm falling forever (
Falling forever)
I've got to break through I'm (
I'm)
I'm going under (
Going under)
(
Drowning in you) I'm going under
(
Going under)

The MUSIC VIDEO:
Some Things To Think About/Debate Over
-This song was played live and put on the "Anywhere But Home Live CD" as Track #2 (3:57). [Zenith, Paris 2004]
Song:
-The Going Under Single was released on September 9th, 2003 in the UK and the rest of the world on the 15th of the same month. The tracklisting is the following:
(1) - Going Under (Fallen)
(2) - Going Under (Acoustic in FM 99 04-14-03)
(3) - Heart-Shaped Box (Acoustic @ WXDX-FM 02-25-03)
(4) - Going Under (Music Video)
Please note the Spanish single has a different acoustic on it: Going Under (Acoustic courtesy of 40 Principales Radio, Spain 2003). BTW, does anyone have this? *bats eyelashes*
-During the Fallen tour, this song was usually after "Haunted," but before "Taking Over Me."
-While this was on the radio, pop stations felt that having too much/too loud/too strong guitars in the song would upset their viewers, so this was when the Going Under (Guitars Down) version would be played, where the guitar track were muted by 1/2. The same occurred with My Immortal, later on.
Song:
-The Going Under demo was the last "new" 2001 - 2002 demo (not including new "versions" like Haunted v4) to be found. It was found in July of 2006 when people were searching for TOD leaks (oh remember those days?). Before the demo was found, there were three phases of popular theories about Going Under:
The first phase, populated around the My Last Breath (MLB) forums, is that there was no such demo created or existed. This was before the Making of Fallen was released/in the hands of the EvCommunity. They said proof of this was in the fact that Going Under was the ONLY song not on the Promotional Copy of Fallen.
The second phase, populated once MOF was released, was that the demo you hear of in the video is merely a rough version of the GU (Fallen), and it wasn't "demoed" but in fact, just worked on from there.
The third phase, populated around EvBoard once a member of the EvBrazilian forums posted on the Field of Innocence forums (FOI v3) a 30 second preview of the GU (Demo), was that the Going Under (Demo) obviously is a private song that shouldn't be listened to and hence that is why it is not around. Clearly this was bogus because if that was the case, why is the song on Fallen?
It was eventually found on EvBoard (of all places), where then people claimed they had it all along and didn't know that was the song they were talking about. Sigh.
Some posts from EvBoard pre-finding the demo:
Phase 1:
I'm pretty sure Going Under doesn't have a 2002 demo...
Phase 2:
You can dl Making Of Fallen (it's quite big a file though), they play it in the background at some point. But it's hard to tell if it's the first demo or just an unfinished version of Fallen GU. All I can say about it is that the demo is harder and when Amy sings "I'm dying again", there seems to be a different background.
Phase 3:
I really like that version whether it's genuine or not. But I swear I read somewhere that the band didn't want it heard or something?
-Amy Lee on "Going Under":
"The lyrics are about coming out of a bad relationship," Lee said. "And when you're at the end of your rope, when you're at the point where you realize something has to change, that you can't go on living in the situation that you're in. It's cool. It's a very strong song."
SOURCE-This article implies that Going Under is either influenced by, or is direct reference to, her abusive relationship with Ben. This is further elaborated on with her comments on Sweet Sacrifice (see topic).
"After I recorded those songs, I was listening to my own words on GOING UNDER. When it goes to the chorus, what I would have loved to hear myself sing is, 'I'm leaving and I'm not going to put up with this anymore.' But instead the line is, 'I'm going under, drowning in you.'
"I was thinking to myself, 'You know what you need to do, and you're not doing it.'"
SOURCE"It's really just related to just growing up. I actually went through a situation for a long time, where I was in a really bad relationship with someone and took a lot of abuse. When I finally ended that relationship, I wrote 'Going Under' - Since then I have grown a million times over, I am learning to stand up for myself."
SOURCE-Quote taken from Playing Evanescence Interview 2003: [Ben talks, (Amy talks)]
"(It's about coming out of a bad relationship. Um, it's about standing up and saying no. And um, it's just coming from the perspective of someone whose kind of at the end of their rope, and-and you know beyond loving someone, you know. Sometimes it's more than that, sometimes it's just an unliveable situation. And that's what the song is about.)"
-A "funny" song meaning as posted by Ben Moody:
Going Under:
Ben and Amy's relationship was "abusive" (meaning he wouldn't let her have the last e.l. fudge double stuff cookie and when she stole it he cut her hair off in her sleep and sold it on the black market along with her left kidney, hence all the kidney stones) and she wrote a song finally saying "NO"
-According to EvLore, this song would have been the first single off of Fallen, before it was changed to Bring Me To Life. I have heard two reasons for this. The first reason, per Wikipedia, is that "the release of the Daredevil soundtrack eclipsed the decision." The second reason, per EvRef, is that "[t]he decision to make Bring Me To Life the first single was made by the record label who felt that a female-fronted rock band wouldn't necessarily do well with the public." I don't know the source for either comment. Do you guys know?
-According to EvLore, Amy has said Going Under was her favorite song from Fallen. Does anyone have a source?
-Some neat info from EvRef regarding the photography on the Going Under Single:
The physical single features the cover photo by an anonymous photographer (no credits are given on any international release) who is assumed to be Frank Veronsky—the photographer of all promotional images for Fallen. The original photo appears on the majority of international singles. The yellowed photo on the DVD single and the Brazilian single has been adjusted in photoshop but is the same original picture. The background artwork usually features a blue stylized motif except for, again, the Brazilian single which has completely different artwork including a video still.
SOURCE-According to Music Notes:
(1) Going Under is written in D Major.
(2) It is set in a time signature of common time and performed in a tempo of 84 beats per minute.
(3) Amy Lee's vocals range from E3 to the note of D5.
SOURCE-The Music Video was #12 on Billboard's "The 15 Scariest Music Videos Ever."
Evanescence compares the trappings of fame to being haunted by ghouls in this clip for the band's 2003 single. Singer Amy Lee's makeup is applied by a gaggle of sinister old women, while the crowd at the band's show morphs into a ravenous pack of zombies. Lee eventually overcomes the visions -- only to find that guitarist Ben Moody is a demon as well.

-Amy Lee on the Going Under Music Video:
Lee sports two of her own designs in the clip for "Going Under," which was shot in Berlin three weeks ago by Philip Stolzl. On the heels of "Bring Me to Life," whose video Stolzl also directed, "Going Under" is the second single off Evanescence's debut, Fallen.
The designs came to her while she was nursing an illness in a hotel in Los Angeles, where the video was originally scheduled to be filmed. The shoot, which called for an underwater scene, didn't happen, but Lee put her bedridden hours to good use. Not only did she sketch out both outfits, she even stitched one herself.
"It's white and has a lot of shreds," she said of the Goth-tinged garment. "It reminds me of something someone who died would wear. It's a long dress, ripped up. Different shreds of different fabric, just flying around underwater.
"The other one, that I wear onstage, is a corset. I worked with a designer on that one. I designed it and he took it from there."
SOURCE^Following up on the above quote, the underwater scenes eventually did get filmed, and the video was finished in May of 2003.
-Ben Moody on the Going Under Music Video:
31. Naikuu - were you uncomfortable with all those men holding your ass in going under?
[J - was josh amongst them?]
No. Six months on a bus with josh will get you used to men doing a number of things
-More on the Going Under Music Video:
VH1: What's the most extravagant thing you've gotten yourself since the album took off?
Lee: I don't have a house, so I can't really buy stuff like that. The only time I really spend a lot of money is when I'm buying clothes or costumes for the band. I designed a corset and had it custom made for the "Going Under" video. It cost $2,500 and that was the most I've ever spent on a piece of clothing.
SOURCE-According to EvLore: Evil Dead was an inspiration behind the video, hence why the people are turning into zombies. Also the scene where Ben is being attacked by the press was suppose to represent the Christian controversy.
Amy swimming and singing underwater, and Ben being questioned relentlessly by the media (The media’s constant questions about the band’s religious affiliation inspired that part in the video). Evil Dead, one of Ben’s favorite movies inspires the use of the zombies in the video.
SOURCE-Stephanie Meyer, author of the
Twilight series, was inspired by both Going Under and My Immortal:
Stephenie Meyer had "My Immortal" and "Going Under" on her homepage at one point because Ev's music inspired her to write.
-David says, along with "My Last Breath" and "Imaginary," that this song was one of his favorites to write:
What was your favourite Evanescence song to write?
i love "going under" and "my last breath". even though it was partially already written before i joined, "imaginary" is my favorite.
SOURCE-(*A special THANK YOU to Double A for this*)Originally, there was an entire underwater house that was created but ultimately was cut from the Going Under Music Video. As talked about in the NMEtv interview:
Back to the top greatest Evanescence videos, as voted for by you. Number three is, uh Going Under. I definitely think this is my top three favorite videos. I really like this one. Um, it was really fun to shoot. We did it in um, Berlin. There's actually a lot of deleted scenes that never made it into the video that were really interesting, with a whole house built underwater, believe it or not. Check it out!
SOURCE @ 4:58-According to David, Going Under was the last song written for Fallen and was written in the six weeks that the band was in Little Rock after leaving LA due to their fight with Wind-Up over refusing to include a male rapper in the band:
So six weeks go by, and at that point we had already written the whole album. The whole album was written; we had sent .mp3s off to the label. They had a whole records worth of material except for a song called 'Going Under,' which was uh one of my favorite songs on the record. But it was um, you know eleven of the twelve songs were already written and done. And we wrote 'Going Under' when we were in Little Rock those six weeks.
SOURCE @ 36:18 - 36:44REVIEWS:
Tim Sendra of All Music:
Evanescence's "Going Under" is one of the harder tracks on the band's debut record, Fallen. The nu-metal grind is lightened by the tinkling pianos and hip-hop-inspired backing vocals, making the song perfect for those who find the male histrionics of Limp Bizkit and their ilk too oppressive. On their U.K. single for "Going Under," the song appears twice: the album version and a live version recorded at WNOR in Norfolk, VA. The radio version is acoustic and gives Amy Lee's vocals free rein to soar. The third song on the disc is an acoustic version of Nirvana's "Heart Shaped Box," recorded at WXDX in Pittsburgh, PA. Lee's vocals, which sound awe-inspiring on the band's own material, are a bit on the overly dramatic side here and serve to make the song into a bad joke. Also included is the video for "Going Under."
SOURCEJohnny Loftus of All Music:
The other half of the album does include flashes of the single's PG-rated nu-metal ("Everybody's Fool," "Going Under").
SOURCEAdrien Begrand of Pop Matters:
Her voice swirls around the by-the-numbers guitars and drum machine on "Going Under", as she makes such banal lines as, "50 thousand tears I’ve cried," sound sincere.
SOURCEVik Bansal of Music OMH:
This follow-up, which is the opening track on Fallen, should be more than strong enough to ensure Evanescence aren't consigned to the bin of one-hit wonders. Similar elements to Bring Me To Life are present: Amy Lee's temptress vocals, pseudo-electronic beats à la Linkin Park, understated but menacing metallic riffs in the background, and a ripping, radio-friendly rock chorus.
Evanescence have poured bits of metal and goth into the cauldron, and by using a smattering of pop, produced a mix that makes those two musical genres more palatable to the general public. They deserve our congratulations.
SOURCEJohnny Loftus of All Music:
"Going Under" surges nicely into its anthemic chorus.
SOURCEJoe D'Angelo of MTV:
Evanescence's second single off Fallen, "Going Under," should be as omnipresent as "Bring Me to Life" is at the moment.
SOURCER.J. Carter of The Trades:
"Going Under" and "Whisper" [both] manage to somehow blend the razor-like licks of Nine Inch Nails with vocals on par with Enya.
