Whisper - The Sound Asleep EP Version:Italics are spoken and whispered words only.0:00 - 0:12
Death in - death in it's most hideous form.0:14 - 0:26
Catch me as I fall
Say you're here and it's all over now
Speaking to the atmosphere
No one's here and I fall into myself
This truth drives me
Into madness
I know I can stop the pain
If I will it all away
1:06 - 1:13
Don't turn away
(Don't give in to the pain)Don't try to hide
(Though they're screaming your name)Don't close your eyes
(God knows what lies behind them)Don't turn out the light
(Never sleep never die)1:36 - 1:42
I'm frightened by what I see
But somehow I know
That there's much more to come
Immobilized by my fear
And soon to be
Blinded by tears
I can stop the pain

Whispered voices at my ear
Dead before my eyes

Some Things To Think About/Debate Over:
-This song was played live and put on the "Anywhere But Home Live CD" as Track #13 (5:46). [Zenith, Paris 2004]
Song:
-This song was played live and put on the "Everybody's Fool Single" as Track #3 (5:26). [Cologne, Germany 10-17-03]
-During the Fallen tour, this song was usually the last song, normally played after 'Imaginary.' This was also the last song when 'My Immortal' was added to the set list - this song acted as a "second encore."
-According to Music Notes:
(1) Whisper is written in F Major
(2) It is set in a time signature of common time and performed in a tempo of 84 beats per minute
(3) Amy Lee's vocals range from C4 to Bb5.
SOURCE-A "funny" song meaning as posted by Ben Moody:
Whisper:
Ben got really sleepy one night when Amy and Ben were supposed to watch a cosby show marathon
-A post from November 2004 on the website "Lyrical-Interpretations," offers this bit of trivia:
"'Upon my end shall I begin' comes from the motto of Mary Queen of Scots, which she embroidered while awaiting her beheading, to indicate her faith that this death would just be the beginning of eternal life. The quotation was also used as the basis for one of T.S. Eliot's 'Four Quartets.'"
-Whisper is one out of the five pre-Fallen songs whose studio version was played on the radio. The Origin Version was apparently the "#1 most requested new single for more than two weeks on the radio station KLEC "Lick" 106.3 FM."
SOURCE -The quote in the beginning of the Sound Asleep Version of 'Whisper' comes from the 1958 movie called
Terror in the Haunted House.
CLIP:
Terror In The Haunted House/My World Dies Screaming (1958):
Sheila Justin (Cathy O'Donnell's): Did I go up the stairs this time doctor?
Dr. Victor Forel (Barry Bernard's): No, it's the same as before. You almost bring yourself to see the truth, and then you . . .
Sheila Justin (Cathy O'Donnell's): But what truth!? All I know is that death in it's most hideous form awaits for me at the top of those stairs.
Dr. Victor Forel (Barry Bernard's): That's not all you know Mrs. Justin. You hold the answers deep within your own mind. Consciously you've forgotten it, that's the way the human mind works. Whenever something is too unpleasant, too shameful for us to entertain, we reject it. We erase it from our memories. But the imprint is always there. Nothing is ever really forgotten.
Sheila Justin (Cathy O'Donnell's): But don't all of us do things were ashamed of?
Note the change in the title of the movie, this is due to (according to an IMBD poster):
That picture, originally released under the artier and more appropriate title "My World Dies Screaming," and years later, for home viewing, as "Terror in the Haunted House" (a somewhat misleading appellation), turns out to be an interesting enough little film that hardly requires this tiresome gimmick (presented as "Psycho-Rama" here!).
-Whisper's 2001 - 2002 Demo was referred to as the 'Post-Origin Demo' in most discographies, until Fallen came out. It was then switched to the 'Whisper 2002' label that was increasingly popular in 2003/4. There is a presumption here that Whisper was "demoed" in 2002, rather than 2001, although that is speculative. It likely comes from the belief that the Not For Your Ears bootleg songs were on some sort of 2002 demo disc (EvBoard discographies mention this as the '2002 Demos' - strange indeed). The fandom has since reverted back to the 'Post-Origin Demo,' (a label shared with 'Lies,' but not with 'Imaginary' as it once did).
-Whisper has four demos: The first one was the Post-Sound Asleep Version, first appearing on EvReference in Dec. of 2007 as a downloadable. It is likely this is the version that was sent around to Promo CDs/for promotion, since it cuts the (copyrighted) intro from the song but nothing else. Next is the version ultimately found on the We The Living Vol. 3 CD in 1998 [US CD Etcetera Records 766188 - my notes say this, is this important?]. This version you can hear the guitars louder in the middle of the song and an extended drum outro (thus confusing early fans, who saw that the duration of this and the SA EP song were the same, thus making fans think the songs were in fact the same). We then have the version that was previewed on the Automata 3.0 CD in 1999 [Canada CD Flaming Fish Music - my notes say this, is this important?]. This version was a type of sampler, if you will, to Evanescence's 'Origin' CD. It is both the track 'Origin,' and Origin's 'Whisper' combined in one. Finally, we have the 2001 - 2002 demo of the song, which speaks for itself. Sometimes the Post-SA/Automata/Post-Origin demos are referred to as v1/v2/v3 respectively. We The Living was not categorized only because it was accidentally replaced with the Post-SA version. Regardless, these labels are incorrect, confusing, and should not be used.
-OKAY! Let's talk about the Latin, shall we? It is suppose to translate to 'save us from danger, save us from evil.' But . . .
The Latin is kind of weird – ‘Servatis’ is 2nd person present indicative, so it means ‘You (plural) are saving.’ ‘A pereculum’ seems to be a mis-spelling of ‘a periculum’ which itself is incorrect – should be ‘a periculo’ (ablative) meaning ‘from danger.’ ‘A maleficum’ is probably meant to be ‘a maleficium’ which again should be ‘a maleficio’ meaning ‘from evildoing.’
While I cannot argue whether it is correct Catholic Latin, I can say that the chanting in Whisper has terrible grammar. It should be "servati" instead of "servatis" and the maleficum is a poor vocabulary choice and both maleficum and periculum are both in the wrong case. The grammar is so bad that in Latin the chant doesnt even mean anything. It is almost gibberish.
It should have been:
serva nos a maleficio
serva nos a periculo
Although it seems to me, considering the bands history and origins, that they should have said:
libera nos a malo
libera nos a periculo
given the fact that "libera nos a malo" is the standard Latin for "deliver us from evil" in the Lord's Prayer.
ok, I was reading this thread so I decided to download some latin to english software...
I put in: Servatis a periculum - Servatis a maleficum and it translated to: You save ante the danger- you save by the criminal
I got confused by the criminal thing so I changed maleficum to malificum and then it translated as: You save ante the danger- you save by wicked
which makes more sense, so I put it in normal english it would be:
Save yourselves from danger- Save yourselves from wicked (evil)
So the way I see it it's:
Servatis a periculum = Save yourselves from danger
Servatis a malificum = Save yourselves from evil
so Amy's translation and spelling is wrong... (she does say that she sucks at Latin) but I could ofcourse be wrong...
PS: when I put in: liberatae tutum me, ex infernis it translated as:
Freed seen me, out of the inhabitants of the lower worlds
I hate to be pedantic and correct you lot and the official site, but the correct latin (and, if you listen carefully, what's chanted) is:
'Salvatis a periculum
Salvatis a maleficum'
Which means 'Saved from danger, saved from evil'. The great thing about Latin is you can see where so many of our English words come from. Salvatis - salvation, periculum - peril, for example. Maleficum shares a root with 'maleficarum', which was part of the title of the old witch hunting book the Malleus Maleficarum (The Hammer of Evildoers). Interesting eh?
The band's lead singer, Amy Lee, says that it means 'Save us from danger, save us from evil.' I'll explain why that is impossible. For reference purposes, here is a proper Latin translation of 'Save us from danger, save us from evil':
Serva nos a periculo, serva nos a malo [or malefico]
First up, maleficum means 'evil-doing' rather than just 'evil', but we can let that one slide. The object of the preposition a, which does mean 'from', absolutely has to be in the ablative case, but periculum and maleficum are in the accusative case. The proper forms, as I put above, are periculo and malefico. Note the change from the -um ending to the -o ending. Next up, the verb. The verb servatis could potentially be one of two things: the second person plural present indicative active, which would mean 'y'all are saving'; or it could be the perfect passive participle, with a literal translation of 'having been saved'. If it is the former, then the sentence comes out nothing close to the meaning of Evanescence's translation: 'Y'all are saving from [danger], y'all are saving from [evil-doing]'. If it is the latter, then it's not even a complete sentence: 'Having been saved from [danger], having been saved from [evil-doing]'.
- At the end of the Fallen version of 'Whisper', the chants say "Servatis a periculum, servatis a maleficum" which means "Save us from danger, save us from evil".
At the very end of 'Whisper' (Fallen version) you can hear a chorus singing some latin
phrases.. what does it say? And what do they mean?
It's a chorus Amy wanted for the song. She also wrote the verses:
'Servatis a periculum.. Servatis a maleficum'
which translated is:
'Save yourselves from danger.. Save yourselves from evil'
“Servatis a periculum, servatis a maleficum”-Rough translation means “Save us from danger, save us from evil.”
According to many sources the line is grammatically incorrect, but Amy Lee maintains that she’s a hell of a Thai chef.
^This quote seems to go around quite often. When did Amy say this? Also, why did she say this? What does being a Thai chef have to do with speaking Latin incorrectly? We all do realize that Thailand doesn't speak Latin or any derivative (Romance) languages correct? Strange.
-The Post-Origin Demo of Whisper uses both 'Death Scene,' and 'O Verona,' (NOT the reprise version, although it sounds close, since it is the same theme) in the introduction. It is NOT TRUE that they use 'Juliet's Requiem.' This was a mistake propagated on EvBoard. There was also an "error" (a loud random noise) occurring at 0:29. This error was fixed on EvBoard because some found it distracting, so the spread around that version as well. That is the version you hear on FallenEvArmy as well.
The part of "Death Scene" is played normally, but the part of "O Verona" is played at a frequency of about 112.24489% than normal (if the normal frequency is 44100Hz, the used frequency for Whisper is 49500Hz)
I heard it was an error when burning the demo cd. there is a version where it's been removed but the original recording had it on it. i don't remember exactly so don't shoot me if i'm wrong but that's what i think has happened (i'll try and look for the source where i found it).
The opening of Whisper 2002 does include samples from Romeo and Juliet. They have used Juliet's Reqiem and O Verona which both appear in the official Romeo and Juliet soundtrack volume 2. At least a bit of them can be heard in the movie too. Maybe you can't hear the whole songs in the movie but some parts can still be recognized
the version of Reprise used here seems to be very slightly modified. sounds like they sped it up a tiny bit to get it to match the tempo and key of the Whisper that followes. having heard the origional, that clicking seems to be a distortion of what was a helicopter sound affect in the background.
the only thing i dont understant is the buildup in the 1st 10 seconds. between Whiper 2002 and the origional Reprise, they dont match up. Reprise starts with some fire and chopper sound affects from which the music just fades up. in Whisper 02, it has a violin buildup. also, the one i have doesnt have that burst about 30 sec in. so it was either modified for the sake of selling the score seperatly, or that theme was used more than once in the movie and im listening to a different one.
Beings as I've sucessfully reproduced that intro (for the fallen version of Whisper) it was in fact Sped up, as well as cross faded with another track on the Soundtrack I think it was track 12 or 13, or somewhere around there. Also the choper effect was due to a bad CD copy. It was a common thing with older CD-R recorders that coping to a disk to fast. or something like that.
the 2001-2002 Whisper demo starts with clips from Death Scene and O Verona (from the Romeo + Juliet soundtrack)
- In the 2002 Demo version of Whisper, the beginning consists of the theme from Romeo and Juliet soundtrack. The song is called O Verona, but Ev speeded it up.
What's the song you can hear at the very beginning of the 'Whisper 'demo?
It's made by two songs from the Romeo+Juliet motion picture directed by
'Romeo+Juliet vol 2' di Baz Luhrmann.. here's the titles for both the tracks:
05. 'O Verona (Reprise)' (written by Nellee Hooper, Marius De Vries, Craig Armstrong)
22. 'Death Scene' (written by Nellee Hooper, Marius De Vries, Craig Armstrong)

-A potential song meaning, as developed by ev.it.
Whisper
Some say that she's dying, or so she thinks, and she is wanting hell so that this torture can end because it's killing her so much. Then she is praying that she can redeem herself, and that if she can, she's safe. As of this point, its sort of looking into the future. She's crying because she refuses to give in, but in hell, the pain is endless - it cannot be interrupted. She begins to get scared of her surroundings in hell, and what's happening to her, because she's realized that it's not going to end. From then on she is in constant agony and fears of what is happening and will literally cry herself into blindness. The last part is the process of death; it's too late, and it's over.
-Amy Lee on 'Whisper':
"Whisper is something that we still play on stage a lot and I love playing it, it's a great live song. But lyrically it doesn't hold a ton of meaning for me anymore 'cause I'm not really at a very dark place in my life at all right now. I'm at a pretty positive place. So unless I'm really angry, I don't totally relate to Whisper"
SOURCE-Renee and Michelle on 'Whisper':
Please, we need a section called "Just Ask Michelle. Cause If You Don't Know The Answer, Ask Her. She'll Get To The Truth!" Ok, now that I have stopped freaking out. [. . .] "Whisper" is Amy talking to God.
[Archived from Renee and Michelle's posts from ev.it]
-'Whisper' was not aired when the Cologne 2003 concert was shown on German TV, due to the fact that it was considered an "encore" song. That is why on most FULL concert .mpeg/.avi/.wmv versions, Whisper is not there. Even in Death was also cut for different reasons.
-'Whisper' was to be a single in the UK (EvRumor), before being changed to 'Imaginary' and then 'Everybody's Fool.' This is based off of posts on EvBoard, and the uncertainty of the fourth single following 'My Immortal's' failure to be popular on the alternative radio scene (see the 'Fallen CD' topic for more info).
-The magazine
Ballistic Test, in their review of Evanescence's 'Origin CD,' described 'Whisper' has having the key "industrial elements" on the CD. The magazine
Decapolis stated that it was a "tough song," in comparison to the more softer "My Immortal." Ironic, since only three years later on the 'Fallen CD,' Adrien Begrand of Pop Matters states that 'Whisper' is a "boring power ballad," that along with 'My Last Breath' brings the CD to a "screeching halt." Someone's being a bit dramatic, huh.
SOURCE-This HAS been played Live @ the TNT Powerhouse, Arkansas on Feb. 03, 2001 (the Origin Version). It was the first song played. Unfortunately, the audio for this has not been released yet.
